The Royal Academy of Bards

is proud to present

Bard's Challenge #23

Gabrielle kissing Xena

The Roolz

The Challenge is to choose one of the 18 pitchers…I mean pictures…and write a story with the maximum word count being…either 100 words (SINGLE), 200 words (DOUBLE), 300 words (TRIPLE), 500 words (HOME RUN ) or 1000 words (GRAND SLAM ).

You may use any fandoms, uber or original characters. The choice is yours.

The catch?

None actually, this time.

There are two categories of competition.

Category 1: Best story (voted upon by the public) for each of the five story length maximums.

Category 2: Home Run Derby

ROOOL #1a: ALL entries must contain no more than 1000 words. I will be using MSWord to verify the word count. My count is the official count and will determine which competing category the story falls into.

ROOOL #1b: SINGLES compete against SINGLES, DOUBLES against DOUBLES etc.

ROOOL #1c: You may enter up to five stories but MUST use five different pictures. The length you choose for each story is up to you. Please indicate on each entry (by number) which picture is used.

ROOOL #2: All entries will also be automatically entered into the HOME RUN DERBY. Entrants will receive points for each entry (SINGLES are 1pt, DOUBLES are 2pts, TRIPLES are 3pts, HOME RUNS are 5pts and GRAND SLAMS are 8pts). Highest total number of points is the HOME RUN DERBY Winner.

For example if you write five stories… 2 SINGLES, 1 DOUBLE, 1 HOME RUN and 1 GRAND SLAM you are awarded 1+1+2+5+8 or 17 Points.

Yes, I do have a tiebreaker system in place, should we need one. Nyah! Total word count for all the entries. So you'd do best to come as close to the max category word count as possible with your entries.

ROOOL #3a: All competing entries will be posted anonymously. However, please put all identifying info on your entry (bard name/email for feedback). We will remove it prior to posting and return it after the voting period.

ROOOL #3b: If you choose to participate but not compete in the voting category, your entry/entries will be posted with your identification on it. Since it is not anonymous, you are allowed to include any characters that belong to you (from previous posted stories). Your entry/entries will still be eligible for the HOME RUN DERBY prize. Please indicate, clearly on your entry/entries whether or not you are competing.

ROOOL #4: Please send your entries in MSWord or equivalent. rtf is preferred. Please let our Munchkins do the coding. It keeps them out of trouble and off the streets.

ROOOL #5a: If you are competing, please do not reveal your participation to anyone who has the potential for being a voter…the only exception being…

ROOOL #5b: You may use a beta reader, but please keep the number of beta readers to a reasonable limit…anything more than three will be considered a violation of…

ROOOL #5c: Posting any of your entries on any other sites or lists (private or public) before the end of the contest is a BIG NO NO.

We ask that entrants who are only participating in the HOME RUN DERBY also voluntarily obey this roool for the duration of the contest. Once the contest is over and the winners are announced, feel free to post EVERYWHERE,

ROOOL #6: There is no number six.

ROOOL #7: Please do not stuff the ballot box or lobby for votes...we at the Academy have gotten very good at identifying this behavior. We won't publicly embarrass you but we will quietly eliminate you from the contest.

The Academy folks are everywhere and know everything…we will find out.

ROOOL #8: The "Roools Committee": aka the Munchkins and I, reserve the final say on everything and anything concerning this challenge.

It's our sandbox or in this case, our ballgame. <.snicker.>

DEADLINE FOR ENTRIES IS May 1st…Send entries to: academy_contest@yahoogroups.com

I will acknowledge receipt of it within 24 hours, if I do not…please send it again to or contact me at PHIL728@aol.com

5 Winners (SINGLE/DOUBLE/TRIPLE/HOME RUN /GRAND SLAM ) will get a gift certificate from their choice of one of several popular online retailers and a Munchkin designed personalized framed tile commemorating their win.
