The Ladder

I watched you as you climbed the ladder
And I'd like to say I'm proud
True, you've achieved the utmost success
But with each rung you achieved
You lost a little bit of yourself
I doubt you even noticed
I don't know who you are anymore
And I'm sure that you don't either
The sad thing is, I don't think you care
I wish I could say the same
You've left your friends and family behind
And joined the country club crowd
You've lost sight of what life's all about
You've lost sight of me, as well
So I wish you luck and happiness
And hope more than anything
That one day you'll realize the truth
When you wake up all alone
With only your success to warm you
That the golden ring in life
Is not the view from the ladder's top
But the love you left behind
