THE HEART OF A WARRIOR

a "Fighting the Good Fight" Sequel

by TrueT159

SUMMARY: Feeling guilty about seriously injuring Gabrielle, Xena contemplates giving up her warrior ways.

Some time had passed since Xena's showdown against the cultists. She had defeated them, setting everyone they had under their control free. And she herself had also completely returned back to normal. However while she was still being manipulated by them, she seriously injured Gabrielle. Dispite having no control over herself at the time, Xena still felt responsible and blamed herself. Even though Gabrielle's was nearly fully recovered, Xena still couldn't help but feel terrible. The guilt had been eating away at her. After alot of thought, Xena came to the conclusion of what she needed to do. Once Gabrielle was well enough to travel two of them set off, riding down the road. But Xena wouldn't tell Gabrielle where they were heading.

GABRIELLE
Come on Xena, tell me where we're going.

Xena smiled.

XENA
I already told you Gabrielle. It's a surprise.

GABRIELLE
Well could you at least give me a hint.

XENA
Nope. Sorry but you're just gonna have to wait.

GABRIELLE
(sighs) Fine.

XENA
Don't worry we should be there soon.

They continued riding for a good while. Gabrielle looked around seeing the beautiful landscape around them. From the vast grassy fields that rolled over the nearly hills. To the crystal clear water of the river they were riding beside. Everything just looked so peaceful. Gabrielle leaned her head against Xena's back as she took in the scenery. Having not fully recovered yet, she was feeling a little tired.
Xena noticed.

XENA
We can stop if you need to rest.

GABRIELLE
No it's okay. You said we were almost there right?

XENA
Yea it's just over that hill.

Xena motioned ahead to the large hill they were coming up to. They continued on, until finally they reached their destination. Xena stopped them in front of a little house and got down. Then she gingerly helped Gabrielle down as well. Gabrielle winced a little from pain as she stood.

XENA
You alright?

GABRIELLE
Yea I'm okay.

XENA
Sorry I know that was a long trip. Maybe we should have waited a bit longer.

GABRIELLE
No it's fine. Honestly I'm just glad to be out of that villages hospital.

Gabrielle looked around.

GABRIELLE
Where are we anyway?

Xena smiled, taking Gabrielle's hand as she led her up to the door and opened it.

XENA
Home.

GABRIELLE
Wha..

Before Gabrielle could finish, Xena carefully picked her up and
carried her inside. She walked into the middle of the room and gently put Gabrielle down. Xena then went back outside for their things. Gabrielle stood, looking around the cozy little house. Slightly confused about what was going on. Then Xena came back in with their packs and shut the door behind her. Gabrielle turned to Xena.

GABRIELLE
Xena what exactly did you mean by home?

Xena put their stuff down.

XENA
Just what it sounded like. This is our new home.

GABRIELLE
I'm confused. You bought a house? Why? It's not we're going to be here often.

Xena walked over to Gabrielle.

XENA
I'll explain later.

She placed her hands on Gabrielle's shoulders.

XENA
Right now you need to rest. Come on.

Xena lead Gabrielle into the bedroom and layed her down on the bed. Then she left the room for a few minutes. When she came back, Xena was carrying some water and fresh bandages.

XENA
Alright let me take a look at you.

Xena undid Gabrielle's old bandages. Inspecting her wounds.

XENA
(thinking to herself) Well at least most of these are just about healed.

However there was one that was still fairly serious. It was healing, but it seemed to be taking a lot longer than expected. As she treated Gabrielle, Xena's mind went back to how Gabrielle had been injured in the first place. She felt so much guilt and anger towards herself.

XENA
(Thinking to herself) I almost killed her. I couldn't fight the cultists control. And I almost killed her. I should've been stronger. I should've fought harder. And now...

Gabrielle saw the pain in Xena's eyes. She knew Xena blamed herself for what happened. As Xena finished bandaging Gabrielle's wounds, Gabrielle took Xena's hand, lightly squeezing it. Trying to reassure her.

GABRIELLE
It's not your fault Xena. You were being controlled. You can't blame yourself.

XENA
Gabrielle I nearly killed you.

GABRIELLE
No YOU didn't. That wasn't really you.

Gabrielle's words were of little comfort to Xena. She wouldn't be so easily convinced of her innocence. Seeing the sadness in Xena's eyes, Gabrielle slowly sat up.

XENA
I'm not sure what else to say, but I'm so sorry. I don't know how you could forgive me.

GABRIELLE
There's nothing to forgive.

Gabrielle leaned her forehead against Xena's.

GABRIELLE
I know that you feel terrible and think that my being hurt is your fault. But I need you to believe me when I tell you it's not. I don't blame you. I know that you would never willingly do that. So you have to stop blaming yourself Xena.

Xena was about to protest when Gabrielle softly kissed her.

GABRIELLE
I love you Xena and nothing will ever change that.

She took Xena's hand as she layed back pulling Xena down with her.
Xena looked down at Gabrielle.

XENA
Are you sure? You're still injured.

GABRIELLE
It's okay Xena.

XENA
I just don't want to accidentally hurt you more.

GABRIELLE
It's been so long. I miss being with you. I know you're worried. But I promise it's okay. But if you really don't want to.

Xena smiled at Gabrielle.

XENA
Of course I want to. I just want to make sure you're alright. But as long as you're sure that you're okay.

GABRIELLE
Yes, I'm sure.

XENA
Okay.

Gabrielle ran her fingers through Xena's long raven hair as Xena leaned down and kissed her passionately. Xena pulled back and undid Gabrielle's top. Revealing Gabrielle's chest. Then Xena leaned back in and began slowly placing soft, gentle kisses down Gabrielle's body. She got to Gabrielle's bottoms and slowy removed them. Revealing Gabrielle's full womanly splendor. Xena herslf, undressed and layed beside Gabrielle. She traced her fingertips down to Gabrielle's entrance. She looked at Gabrielle making sure that she indeed wanted this. Without saying anything, Gabrielle reached down and guided Xena's fingers inside her. Letting out a soft moan as she felt Xena enter her. She kissed Xena as she began moving against her hand. Xena followed Gabrielle's lead and began slowly moving inside her.

GABRIELLE
Xena...

Gabrielle could feel her desire building as Xena began quickening her pace. Xena continued until Gabrielle suddenly let out loud moan. Xena quickly stopped.

XENA
Are you okay? I didn't hurt you did I?

Gabrielle giggled.

GABRIELLE
Not at all. You were just making me feel so wonderful, that I couldn't help myself.

XENA
Are you sure? I don't want you to push yourself.

Gabrielle pulled Xena's face close to hers, kissing her.

GABRIELLE
(joking tone) Xena I'm fine. And if you ask me if I'm okay again, I'm going to kill you.

Gabrielle encouraged Xena to keep going. Though hesitant out of concern, Xena continued, picking up where she left off. As Gabrielle felt herself getting ever closer to her climax. She reached down, getting Xena to go further into her as she continued moving. Xena knew Gabrielle was moments away from achieving release. She held Gabrielle close as she sped up. Faster and faster until finally Gabrielle felt the waves of extacy overtake her. Xena passionately kissed her, as Gabrielle felt the high begin to subside. After a bit Gabrielle fell asleep. When she awoke she saw Xena was sitting by the bed. Gabrielle could see that she clearly had something on her mind.

GABRIELLE
Xena?

XENA
(Realizing Gabrielle was awake) Oh Gabrielle you're awake.

GABRIELLE
You locked like you were thinking about something just now.

Xena was quite for a moment, seemingly to gather her thoughts before she spoke.

XENA
Gabrielle do you ever regret coming with me?

GABRIELLE
You mean way back when we first met? No, of course not.

XENA
It's just that you've been put in so many dangerous and deadly situations by me. How many times am I going to let you get hurt because of the way I live my life?

Gabrielle gave Xena a look of concern.

GABRIELLE
What are you saying Xena?

XENA
Gabrielle I can't bare the sight of seeing you get hurt anymore. Which is why I've decided that my days as a warrior are over.

×××

Gabrielle slowly sat up, completely surprised by what Xena had just said.

GABRIELLE
What are you talking about?

She paused for a moment.

GABRIELLE
Oh I get it, it's a joke. You not being a warrior, good one Xena.

Xena looked at her in complete sincerity.

XENA
I'm serious Gabrielle.

GABRIELLE
What? But you can't, that's part of who you are. You're Xena, the warrior princess.

XENA
Not anymore.

GABRIELLE
Is this because of what happened to me? Xena, you can't keep blaming yourself for this. Besides it's not like I've never been injured before.

Xena gave Gabrielle a sad look, as she turned away.

XENA
Yes but this was serious and I was the one that did it. Every time I close my eyes I see you laying on the ground in front of me. Myself, holding the sword covered with your blood.

Gabrielle could see how much Xena was hurting inside. She held Xena's hand, trying to reassure her.

GABRIELLE
But I'm okay.

XENA
Because you were lucky. What if something like that happens again?

GABRIELLE
You mean like you becoming mind controlled and attacking me again. I highly doubt that.

XENA
You know what I mean. I'm constantly running into dangerous situations. And you're always right there with me.

GABRIELLE
Because I want to be. I wouldn't want to be anywhere else but by your side.

Xena gave her a soft smile as she gently stroked Gabrielle's face.

XENA
I know and I couldn't imagine not having you here with me. And that's why I've decided to do this.

GABRIELLE
But I don't want you to quit fighting because of me

XENA
Gabrielle so much of what's happened in my life is because of you. All the love, all the joy, all the good. It's all because of you.

What Xena just said caused Gabrielle think of something.

GABRIELLE
All the good. You say you need to do as much good as you can to try and make up for your past. Just how do you plan to keep doing all that good if you're not fighting for it?

XENA
There are plenty of ways to do good without picking up a sword. I'll be fine.

GABRIELLE
But...

XENA
I'll be fine. You don't need to worry about anything.

Xena gently layed Gabrielle back down.

XENA
Now you just relax and get some rest. I'll go get you something to eat.

Gabrielle watched as Xena stood up and left the room.

GABRIELLE
Xena...

Time went by and soon Gabrielle had completely recovered. She thought that once she was fully healed and Xena saw that she really was okay, then Xena would reconsider giving up her warrior ways. But that wasn't the case. And soon she would see just how truly committed Xena was to leaving that part of herself behind. One day Xena and Gabrielle had made their way to a nearby village to get some things they needed. They walked around browsing the shops.

GABRIELLE
I'm still not used to you not wearing your armor

XENA
Well if I'm not fighting anymore. I don't really need armor, now do I?

GABRIELLE
I guess not. The whole you not being a warrior thing is still feels weird. Not to mention staying in one place this long.

XENA
I know it's a big adjustment to make. It's just gonna take some time to get used to.

GABRIELLE
I suppose.

As they continued on Gabrielle couldn't help but wonder something.

GABRIELLE
Xena?

XENA
Yeah?

GABRIELLE
Are you happy?

Xena stopped looking at the items and turned her attention to Gabrielle.

XENA
What do you mean?

GABRIELLE
Don't play dumb. It's a simple question. Are you happy?

XENA
Of course I'm happy. Gabrielle where's this coming from?

GABRIELLE
It's just you've completely changed how you live your life. And such a sudden and drastic change can be hard anyone. Not to mention your reasoning behind it.

XENA
I'm fine Gabrielle. You give me all the happiness that I could ever want. Now come on let's finish up and go home.

Xena and Gabrielle finished getting their things and headed back home. As they walked Xena heard horses quickly coming up behind them. She looked back seeing some raiders heading towards them. Xena grabbed Gabrielle's arm and got off the road. A number of the raiders rode by, but then one stopped in front of them. He looked at Xena, vaguely recognizing her.

RAIDER
You look familiar. Do I know you?

XENA
No sorry.

Xena quickly turned away from him. She took Gabrielle's arm and began walking away.

GABRIELLE
(whisper) Who is that?

XENA
(whisper) A raider that got locked up because of me. After I took out most of his men. I don't think he's going to be too happy to see me.

RAIDER
Are you sure? I could swear I've seen you before.

XENA
You must be thinking of someone else.

Xena tried to hurry off before he could figure out who she was. The raider kept looking at Xena, trying to place where he'd seen her before. Then it came to him.

RAIDER
Wait a minute you're Xena! I've been looking forward to the day I'd find you. You're gonna pay for what you did.

He got off his horse and drew his sword as he walked towards Xena. Xena got in front of Gabrielle.

XENA
Gabrielle go.

GABRIELLE
Xena your completely unarmed. I know you're a skilled fighter but there's a lot of them.

XENA
who said I was fighting them.

Then Gabrielle remembered Xena's choice to stop fighting.

GABRIELLE
Xena what do you plan on doing?

XENA
Don't worry I'll be fine. Just go home, I'll be there soon.

GABRIELLE
But Xena.

XENA
Please just go. I promise I'll be alright. Besides I don't need to fight to take care of them.

Dispite Gabrielle's hesitancy, she listened to Xena and went home. Leaving Xena with the raiders.

RAIDER
Get her.

The group of raiders charged the unarmed, non combative Xena. As Gabrielle flead the scene all she could think about was Xena.

GABRIELLE
I don't know what you got planned, but if you're really done fighting, please just stay safe Xena.

×××

Face to face agienst the raiders, Xena moved and dodged their incoming attacks. Despite not throwing out any of her own attacks, Xena was able to hold her own. She grabbed some rope she had just gotten and tied a loop at one end. She continued to dodge the raiders and when she saw an opening, Xena tossed the rope, looping it around one of the raiders. She yanked it, pulling it tight and dragging the raider to the ground. She quickly tied him up, ensuring he would no longer be an issue. As Xena was finished, another raider came up, swinging his sword at her. Xena just managed to avoid the attack. She rolled then turned to face him. The raider charged Xena. Still crouching, Xena grabbed a fist full of dirt and threw it in his eyes. As he stopped, trying to clear his vision, Xena tripped him. Sending the raider crashing to the ground. She restrained him as well. Suddenly Xena found herself surrounded. The raiders began taking shots at her. Xena avoided most of their strikes. But without any sort of weapon to block and being out numbered. The raiders ended up landing some of their attacks. One of them swung, cutting Xena's leg.

XENA
Gah!

Xena quickly moved, putting a bit of space between herself and the raiders.

XENA
(thinking to herself) I'm sure I gave Gabrielle enough time to get away. So I don't see any point to dragging this out any longer.

Another raider rushes Xena, swinging at her. Xena turned to dodge, but the attack landed. Cutting the back of Xena's shoulder. She let out a yelp of pain. She briefly gripped at the wound. Xena looked back, seeing more of the raiders coming for her. She quickly took off into a nearby tree and begin leaping between the treetops above. Making it so the raiders would lose track of her location. Her plan was to confuse and disorient them. Giving Xena the chance to take them down one by one. They tried, but couldn't follow her. Becoming annoyed with Xena's antics, the raiders decided to give up and leave. Xena watched from above as the raiders left. When the cost was clear, Xena came down from the trees and made her way back home. As Xena walked through the door, Gabrielle was Waiting for her.

GABRIELLE
Xena! You're back.

She went over to Xena. As she got closer, Gabrielle noticed Xena was bleeding from multiple wounds.

GABRIELLE
You're hurt.

Xena gave a reassuring smile.

XENA
It's not as bad as it looks. They're all minor cuts. Nothing that'll take long to heal.

GABRIELLE
Did you really not fight back?

XENA
I didn't need to.

GABRIELLE
The cuts on your shoulder and leg would say other wise.

XENA
I did what I set out to do. I gave you time to get away safely.

Gabrielle signed.

GABRIELLE
You know I thought we were long past the you feeling the need to protect me thing. You know I can take of myself.

Gabrielle went got some water and motioned to Xena to sit down.

XENA
I know. It's just with everything that's happened recently. I just don't want to see you get hurt anymore.

Xena sat as Gabrielle tended to her wounds.

GABRIELLE
And what about you? If you insist on not fighting, then you can't be putting yourself in danger like that. You're gonna get yourself seriously hurt or worse.

XENA
it's alright Gabrielle, I'll be more careful.

GABRIELLE
No it's not alright. You can't have it both ways Xena. If you want to give up being a warrior, fine. Well it's not, but that's beside the point. You have stop putting yourself in harms way like this.

Gabrielle finished bandaging Xena's injuries.

XENA
Okay, I'll try. I promise.

Later that night Xena and Gabrielle were sleeping. Xena however, was restless, tossing and turning in her sleep. Images of herself injuring Gabrielle replayed in her mind. Only it didn't stop there, in her nightmare Xena killed her. She watched the scene again and again. Meanwhile Gabrielle was awakened by a noise. She sat up, But didn't see anything. Then she noticed it was Xena. Seeing that she was clearly having some sort of nightmare, Gabrielle nudged Xena to wake her.

GABRIELLE
Xena. Xena.

Suddenly Xena's eyes shot open and she franticly sat up.

XENA
Gabrielle!

Gabrielle touched Xena's arm.

GABRIELLE
It's okay you were just having a bad dream.

Xena breathe heavily, her heart raced and her hands shook in fear. It took a few moments. But as she came back to reality, she realized it was a just a nightmare. Xena slowly calmed her breathing and her heart slowed to normal. But she couldn't get her hands to stop shaking. Gabrielle reached over and held Xena's hand.

GABRIELLE
Everything's alright.

Gabrielle knew what her dreams were of. Xena didn't need to say anything. This wasn't the first time Gabrielle had seen Xena talking in her sleep or waking up in terror recently. Afterwards Xena would always insist that she was fine, but it was becoming very clear to Gabrielle that she was anything but. Because ever since Xena had regained her self awareness after injuring her, Gabrielle noticed that she wasn't acting quite like her usual self. Aside from quitting being a warrior. Xena almost always had a look of sadness in her eyes. She felt a bit distant. And she almost never really seemed to be fully present, as if part her mind were elsewhere. Gabrielle sat with Xena for a while in silence. Finally after Xena had completely calmed down and the shaking stopped. She turned to Gabrielle.

XENA
I'm okay now, thank you.

GABRIELLE
But are you really?

XENA
What do you mean?

GABRIELLE
I'm not blind. I can see that you're hurting.

She lightly squeezed Xena's hand, as she leaned on her shoulder.

GABRIELLE
You don't have to act all brave and pretend that everything's fine. I'm here Xena. Let me in. Let me help you.

XENA
I'm sorry I don't mean to worry you.

GABRIELLE
Don't be. I just want you to be okay. What ever it takes to do to get you back to feeling like yourself, we'll do it.

Gabrielle hugged Xena.

GABRIELLE
It's gonna be okay Xena.

Xena in turn held Gabrielle close.

XENA
Gabrielle, I don't know what would I do without you.

×××

Time passed and the seasons changed as Xena and Gabrielle carried on with their new domestic lifestyle. Things were quiet and simple. Finding a solution to Xena's mental and emotional pain however, was proving to be anything but. Gabrielle could still see the guilt and suffering that Xena was going through. She tried, but it seemed nothing she said to Xena would releave Xena of her guilt. Most nights Xena was still tormented with nightmares. One night inparticular seemed worse than most. Xena sprung up as she awoke from the terrifying dream. Once she realized that it was yet another nightmare, she looked beside her seeing Gabrielle sleeping peacefully.

XENA
(thinking to herself) Good, at least I didn't wake her this time.

Xena got up and went outside. She sat for a while as she tried to clear her mind. Meanwhile as she slept, Gabrielle rolled over. Her arm going to Xena's side of the bed. Not feeling Xena there, she woke up. The half asleep Gabrielle lifted her head as she scanned the room for Xena.

GABRIELLE
(sleepily) Xena?

Not seeing her, Gabrielle got up. As she made her way out of the bedroom, she saw Xena through the window outside. She went out and sat beside her.

GABRIELLE
Everything okay?

XENA
Yeah.

GABRIELLE
Did you have another nightmare?

Xena didn't say anything. She just looked into the distance with the pained look in her eyes that Gabrielle had come to see far too often.

GABRIELLE
Xena you can't keep going on like this. How long do you plan on holding on to this guilt. You need to forgive yourself and let it go.

XENA
I can't.

Knowing Xena so well, Gabrielle knew that she was always far harder on herself than necessary. But this however was worse than Gabrielle had ever seen Xena's guilt get to her. She knew that she had to find a way to help Xena heal the pain that was plaguing her heart. She quietly sat with Xena for a while.

XENA
Go back to sleep, I'm fine now. I'll be back in soon.

GABRIELLE
I don't want to leave you like this. I can stay with you as long as you need.

XENA
It's alright Gabrielle, I'm feeling better now.

Xena gave Gabrielle a small smile.

XENA
Thanks to you.

Xena gave Gabrielle a light kiss on the cheek.

XENA
Go on.

She waved Gabrielle off. Gabrielle stood up and went back inside. Later Gabrielle woke up again and saw Xena still hadn't come back in. She went out to get her and after a while Gabrielle convinced Xena to come back to bed. Eventually Xena fell asleep. Gabrielle on the other hand, layed there awake thinking about what she could possibly do to help Xena get passed all of this. She looked over at Xena and quietly spoke to her as she slept.

GABRIELLE
I wish I knew how to help you. I can't stand seeing you hurt like this.

She thought some more. Then after some time, it finaly came to her. She knew what she had to do. The next day Gabrielle woke up bright and early. Seeing that Xena was still asleep, she quietly got up. Making sure not to wake her. Then Gabrielle got to work. After packing up a few things, Gabrielle was ready to go. She left Xena a note, just saying she had to do a few things and that she'd be back soon. And with that Gabrielle set out on her mission.

GABRIELLE
(Thinking to herself) Don't worry Xena. I'm going to help you find yourself again. What ever it takes.

Some time later Xena awoke. She noticed Gabrielle wasn't there. She sat up.

XENA
Gabrielle?

When Xena didn't get a response, she got up to see where Gabrielle was. Xena checked the rest of the house and when she didn't find her, Xena went outside figuring Gabrielle must be there. But Gabrielle was no where to be found. Unsure of where Gabrielle had gone, Xena went back inside.

XENA
(thinking to herself) Where is she?

Then Xena found the note that Gabrielle had left. She waited for Gabrielle to return. But after a long time when Gabrielle still hadn't come back, Xena began to wonder if she had run into trouble. She was just about to go looking for her, when Gabrielle walked through the door.

XENA
There you are.

GABRIELLE
Sorry, that took longer than I thought.

XENA
What took longer than you thought? Where were you?

GABRIELLE
I'll explain later. Come on we gotta go.

XENA
And where exactly are we going?

Gabrielle grabbed Xena's hand and lead her outside.

GABRIELLE
You'll see. Now come on.

They rode off, traveling for a bit. Gabrielle told Xena which way to go. Finally they arrived at the location Gabrielle had picked out. It was a small village.

XENA
What's this?

GABRIELLE
Don't tell me you're losing your memory now too?

Xena looked at her.

XENA
You know what I meant. Why are we here?

GABRIELLE
We're here because clearly you need a reminder of who you are Xena.

Gabrielle reminded Xena of her heroic actions while they were there before. As she did, one of the villagers that Xena had saved came up to her.

VILLAGER
Xena, you're back. It's so good to see you. I never got the chance to thank you for helping us. You saved my life. Thank you. I don't know how I could ever repay you.

XENA
There's no need. I'm glad I could help.

VILLAGER
Even so, thank you. I don't know what we would have done if it weren't for you.

The villager thanked Xena again and left. Xena turned to Gabrielle.

XENA
Gabrielle I see what you're trying to do here. And I appreciate it. But a little trip down memory lane isn't going to change anything.

GABRIELLE
We'll see. Come on we've got a lot places to go.

With that Gabrielle and Xena set off to the next destination on Gabrielle's list.

GABRIELLE
(Thinking to herself) How ever long it takes, and what ever I have to do. I will get the true Xena back.

×××

Xena and Gabrielle continued on their journey. Gabrielle was determined to break Xena free from the darkness and pain that had such a tight grip on her heart. She knew that she had to remind Xena of who she really was. They ventured all over as Gabrielle show Xena all the good that she's done. Her plan was to visit as many people and places as it took. The next stop was a little town that Xena had defended from a giant that wanted to take the village as part of his conquest.

XENA
Let me guess Yet another village that I've helped in some way.

GABRIELLE-
Yup, come on.

As Xena and Gabrielle came through the village gate the villagers noticed them.

VILLAGER
It's Xena! She's back.

A number of people gathered around Gabrielle and Xena. Gabrielle smiled at Xena. All of them thanking Xena for her help.

VILLAGER
Please come, we'll prepare a celebration for your return.

XENA
That's really not necessary.

VILLAGER
But we insist. It's not everyday the hero of your village returns. Now come, come.

Xena looked at Gabrielle. Gabrielle just shrugged. The villagers put on a feast inside the village hall to celebrate Xena.

GABRIELLE
See Xena look at how much your help meant to these people. Something you couldn't have done if you weren't a warrior.

XENA
Gabrielle did you know about this?

GABRIELLE
I'm as surprised as you are.

XENA
Please tell me this is the last place you planned on taking me.

GABRIELLE
Nope.

XENA
Look Gabrielle I..

Before Xena could finish one of the villagers barged through the door frantic and out of breath.

VILLAGER
We've got to get out of here. There's a large army coming for the village.

The village leader walked over to the panicked villager.

VILLAGE LEADER
Calm down, what are you talking about?

VILLAGER
While I was out fishing I saw them heading towards me. I had a feeling that they were bad news so I quickly hid. Luckily they didn't see me. But I over heard the leader talking. He said something about expanding his territory and he mentioned that our village was right on his route. The leader wants to take it and use it as an outpost.

The village leader turned and spoke to the rest of the villagers.

VILLAGE LEADER
Alright everyone, get those who can't fight to safety. The rest of you get ready to defend.

Gabrielle stepped forward.

GABRIELLE
We'll help you.

VILLAGE LEADER
Thank you. We would greatly appreciate your aid once again.

The village leader took his leave to prepare the village for the upcoming battle. Xena grabbed Gabrielle's arm and pulled her off to the side.

XENA
What are you doing?

GABRIELLE
We can't just leave these people to defend themselves.

XENA
It looks like they have everything under control. So I think it's time for us to go.

GABRIELLE
You can't be serious.

Gabrielle pulled her arm away.

GABRIELLE
The Xena I know would never abandon people that needed help.

XENA-
Since I don't fight anymore, there isn't much we can do here.

GABRIELLE
What do you mean we? If you wanna stay here, fine. But I'm going out there and helping to defend the village.

XENA
You can't.

Gabrielle looked at Xena, insulted by the implication that she needed Xena's approval to do this.

GABRIELLE
I can't? Look Xena if you're not going to help these people, then stay here. And you know what, if you really don't want to fight anymore, fine. I'm not gonna force you. But giving that up is your choice, not mine.

XENA
But if something happens to you again and I'm not there to protect you.

GABRIELLE
I don't need you to protect me! I'm not some fragile little girl that needs to be sheltered. I thought after all this time you would know that.

XENA
Gabrielle I'm sorry, I just....

Xena didn't know what to say. Dispite her angry outburst, Gabrielle knew Xena was only concerned for her well-being.

GABRIELLE-
Look when I'm done here we'll go back home and figure what we're gonna do.

XENA
You're still going out there?

Gabrielle gently brushed Xena's cheek.

GABRIELLE
Don't worry I'll be careful. Everything's gonna be okay. If you can't fight anymore, then I'll fight for both of us. Stay here, I'll be back.

Gabrielle left to join the villagers outside. Xena sat there alone with her thoughts.

XENA
(thinking to herself) After everything she's been through because of me, Gabrielle's still so strong. And yet I can't even think of picking up my sword without my hand shaking, or going back to that moment. I'm sorry Gabrielle but I don't know how I'm supposed to get passed this.

Meanwhile Gabrielle and some of the villagers were still preparing for the incoming army's attack. She took charge and was directing the villagers on what to do. Then the look out she had sent out came running back.

LOOK OUT
They're here! They're here!

Gabrielle looked and saw the army advancing towards the village. She turned and addressed the villagers.

GABRIELLE
Alright I know there hasn't been a lot of time to prepare, but I know we can do this. Everyone knows what they have to do?

The villagers cheared, showing they understood the plan Gabrielle had told them, along with their roles it.

GABRIELLE
Okay let's go!

And with that the battle began.

×××

The villagers faced off against the attacking army, with Gabrielle leading them. They fought them as best they could. But they were vastly outnumbered. Fortunately from all the time she had spent with Xena, Gabrielle had a few tricks up her sleeve. During the preparations she helped the villagers to set up traps and told them a number of tricks to try and stay out of direct combat against highly skilled fighters, while still being able to defend the village. Gabrielle raced all around. Ensuring the villagers were doing what they needed to do. Making sure any injured got to safety. All while fighting off a number of the army herself. All during this time Xena was still inside village hall. Lost in her own thoughts.

XENA
(thinking to herself) How could I act so cowardice? When after everything she's gone through, Gabrielle is still out there. Fighting to
defend those people. Yet here I am, to afraid to wield my weapons. Like a frightened child I just sit here, unable to anything. I'm sorry Gabrielle, forgive me.

Back outside the battle forged on. Gabrielle and the villagers began to push back the army.

GABRIELLE
Keep going, we've almost got them.

As she shouted to the villagers, the leader of the army showed himself. He stood in front of Gabrielle.

ARMY LEADER
Do you really think that you and these simple villagers can stand up to my army?

GABRIELLE
Just look around. We seem to be doing a pretty good job.

The leader of the army chuckled.

ARMY LEADER
For now. You didn't think that this was the full force of my army did you?

GABRIELLE
However many men you have, we'll stop you.

ARMY LEADER
We'll see.

The leader of the army raised his arm, giving some sort of signal. Seeing this, his men stopped fighting and began to retreat. He turned and walked away.

ARMY LEADER
I'll get rid of this village one way or another.

Assuming they had won, the villagers cheared in celebration. They surrounded Gabrielle as they thanked her. But Gabrielle couldn't shake the feeling that something wasn't right.

GABRIELLE
(Thinking to herself) Why did they retreat so easily? Something's wrong.

The villagers dropped their guard as they celebrated their victory. Gabrielle was about to warn them that it might not be over yet. When suddenly a large fire ball fell from the sky, crashing into one of the houses. The villagers were stood there in stunned silence. Unsure of what just happened. Then another fire ball hurled through the air and smashed into another building near all of them.

GABRIELLE
RUN!!

The villagers erupted into a panic as they began to flee. But as they tried to escape the village, they were found themselves blocked in by the army. They were trapped inside the burning village as it was being pelted with projectiles. Still inside, Xena heard the loud crashing and people screaming. She raced to the window,. As she looked out, Xena saw the village being set ablaze. She ran outside, seeing the horrible sight of the smashed buildings and the people fleeing in terror. Instinctively she began directing the villagers towards the village's gate, not knowing it had been blocked off. Xena ran dodging the incoming rain of fire as she searched for Gabrielle in the chaos.

XENA
Gabrielle! Gabrielle!

Meanwhile Gabrielle stood against the army blocking their exit. The villagers that she had prepared to face them were now far too scared to fight. She knew her odds weren't good, but she figured she could at least by time for the villagers to find another way out.
She looked back at the villagers.

GABRIELLE
Go get out of here!

The villagers turned and ran. Gabrielle turned her attention back to the enemies in front of her. They changed her and she began fending them off. Taking down as many as she could. She fought with everything she had. Then during the fight, Gabrielle heard a noise that sounded like someone crying. As she fought Gabrielle searched for where the sound was coming from. Then she spotted a child that had been trapped by the blaze. Wasting no time, Gabrielle disengaged from her fight and ran to rescue the child. When she got there she quickly began pulling away the burning pieces of wood, making it so she could get to them. Then Gabrielle reached in and pulled the child from the blaze. She gave the frightened child a comforting smile.

GABRIELLE
Don't worry, you're safe now.

As Gabrielle checked to make sure the child was unharmed, a number of the attacking army's men approached them from behind. She saw a look of terror appear on the child's face. She looked behind her, seeing the enemy closing in on them, ready to strike. Instinctively Gabrielle grabbed the child, as she tried to shield them. She turned away bracing herself for attack.

GABRIELLE
(Thinking to herself) This is it.

Then after a moment when she didn't feel the sword hit her, Gabrielle cautiously opened her eyes. Then she saw what stopped the attack.

GABRIELLE
Xena!

There in fact Xena stood. With sword in hand, she pushed back the soldier. Knocking his weapon away. The rest of the group charged at Xena. She fought off the members of the army. Taking them down with relative ease. When the group was taken care of, Xena turned her attention to Gabrielle.

XENA
Everyone okay?

GABRIELLE
Yeah.

Gabrielle stood and picked up the child.

XENA
We have to get everyone to safety. And stop this army.

GABRIELLE
Xena are you okay?

XENA
I am. Thanks to you. But we'll talk later. Right now we have more important things to do.

GABRIELLE
I'm assuming you have a plan.

Xena filled Gabrielle in on her plan to stop the army and save the village.

GABRIELLE
Alright got it.

XENA
Now Gabrielle I want you to go with the villagers.

GABRIELLE
Even after all of this, you really still don't think I can take care of myself?

Xena placed her hand on Gabrielle's shoulder.

XENA
I know you can. Which is why I want you to go with them. You can protect them and make sure they get away safely.

GABRIELLE
What about the army?

Xena lifted her sword.

XENA
Leave them to me.

Gabrielle agreed and ran off to help the villagers escape. Dispite the situation she couldn't help but smile inside. Xena, the warrior princess was finally back. Gabrielle defended the villagers as they escaped from the chaos. Meanwhile Xena faced off against the army. Dropping them one by one. Apparently despite her time away from battle, she hadn't lost her touch. She was just as great of a fighter as she ever was. She ran through them with little effort. After having a large number of his men taken down, the leader of the army called his men to retreat. They flead from the village never to return. Once the fire was put out and the villagers could come back, Gabrielle looked for Xena. She saw her sitting off by herself. She went over to Xena.

GABRIELLE
Xena?

Xena pulled Gabrielle in and hugged her.

XENA
Thank you.

GABRIELLE
For what?

XENA
For never giving up on me. I know lately things have alot to deal with. But you stood by my side and helped remind me who I really am.

Gabrielle smiled.

GABRIELLE
Of course. I'll always be here for you Xena. I'm just glad you're finally back to yourself.

Soon the village was being fixed up and it was time for Xena and Gabrielle to leave. The villagers thanked both of them for their help once again as they left. When they finally got back home Xena told Gabrielle to wait outside.

GABRIELLE
Why?

XENA
It's a surprise.

GABRIELLE
Oh no. Please Xena no more secrets or surprises. I really don't think I can take anymore.

Xena chuckled.

XENA
You'll like this one.

GABRIELLE
That's what you said last time.

XENA
Relax. Stay here, I'll be right back.

Xena went inside. She came back out a a little while later. She was carrying their normal packs.

XENA
Alright let's get going.

GABRIELLE
Where?

XENA
How often do we actually have a planned destination.

GABRIELLE
Good point... wait you don't mean we're leaving for good do you?

XENA
I guess if you want to stay..

GABRIELLE
No! No I want things to be back to normal. I can't believe I miss the nights of sleeping on the ground.

Xena chuckled.

XENA
Well ready to go?

GABRIELLE
I've been ready.

So off they went leaving behind the little house along with the pain and guilt that had a hold over Xena's heart. But she was strong, brave, resilient. After all she did have the heart of a warrior.

THE END ❤
