Learning to Trust

Part 14
Chapter 28Jace opened the front door and led Taryn into the hallway. "Did you enjoy the meal?"
Taryn turned around and caught hold of the front of Jace's shirt. She pulled Jace toward her and kissed the taller woman lightly on the lips. "I loved the meal, the restaurant was great, and the company was even better. I've missed you."
Jace nodded in agreement. "I've missed you, too, which is weird because I've seen you everyday since Tuesday." She closed the small distance that was still between them and hugged Taryn's body to her.
Taryn enjoyed the open display of affection. "This is nice and I do understand what you mean. I see you all day, but I can't do this to you. I was so relieved to finally get to Friday. We have been way too busy this week for my liking."
Jace released her hold on Taryn. "I have some wine in the fridge, if you're interested?" She walked toward the kitchen with Taryn's hand firmly in her own.
"I'm driving…"
Jace cut her statement off. "You don't have to."
When they got to the kitchen, Jace took the bottle out of the fridge and placed the corkscrew in the top of the bottle.
Taryn took a seat at the counter and watched as Jace nimbly pulled the cork out in one swift movement. "I don't have to what?"
"Drive. We haven't spent much time alone together and if you wanted to that is… I was hoping you'd stay here?" Jace had been trying to ask Taryn all day to stay over. Whenever they had slept together before, there had always been a reason, but since leaving Jane's house five days earlier both women had taken to sleeping at their own homes and Jace missed lying beside Taryn.
Taryn flashed Jace a smile. "I was beginning to think you'd never ask."
Jace dropped her head, "Am I that hopeless?"
Taryn picked up one of the glasses and held it toward Jace. "No. It's just been a bitch of a week and I've missed your goodnight hugs."
Jace clinked her glass to Taryn's. "Here's to spring break. You are so lucky, you get two weeks of free time. Do you have any plans?"
The blonde sipped her wine and thought over Jace's words. "Not really. I handed my thesis back to my advisor, which was a relief. When he called on Tuesday, it sounded like I was in deep shit. Cory had told me I needed to get in touch with him urgently. It turned out that my formatting wasn't correct and chapter three needed rewording in places. He's given me the go ahead to implement."
Jace frowned. "I thought you had the go ahead in January. You've been collecting data for weeks."
Taryn smiled impishly. "I may have used poetic license when I applied to you for permission." She could tell Jace was still a little surprised. "My study needs to run the whole semester for the pre- and post-test data. I knew I couldn't wait until midterm before implementing. My professor told me to go for it as the advisor's permission is just a formality."
"Are you sure?"
"Jace, he's given me the go ahead to work on chapter four. I wouldn't have busted my butt trying to get chapter three to him before the vacation if I thought things weren't okay. I sacrificed two dates with you to get the paper to him on time."
Jace smirked. "Sacrificed, huh?"
"Too right! Do you know how appealing a night in with you is compared to a night reading tedious research manuals? I wanted to clear my assignments so that I could enjoy the vacation and be around in case Jane had to fly back to Florida."
Jace studied her girlfriend for a few moments. Their time together had been limited. At work, they had both tried to maintain some distance and had been on all accounts, very successful. It had been hard for Jace to detach herself from Taryn and pretend to be aloof. There were times when she would look up from her desk and find Taryn in her doorway and the mere sight of her would send her pulse racing. In the evenings, Taryn had been to class and then worked on her assignments. Neither woman had asked the other to stay over and the lack of physical contact had been hard. She watched as Taryn took another sip of her drink. "So, does that mean you're staying?"
"Yes. I thought I'd made that clear."
"I wasn't sure. This is supposed to be your last night at the apartment."
Taryn shrugged. "JJ and Cory went to the club tonight. It's no big deal. It's not like I can't see them whenever. To be honest, JJ and I are still unsure of each other since Tuesday. I apologized, but I think I caused some friction between her and Cory."
"They sorted things out, didn't they?"
"According to Cory they did, but she was mad at JJ for a little while. I think JJ resents the fact that I was the cause." She shrugged and a wistful look clouded her once happy features.
Jace took Taryn's hand. "Let's move this conversation to the sofa. It's way more comfortable. You look like you have something on your mind."
"How do you do that?"
"Do what?"
"Know what I'm thinking. It's like you read my mind."
Jace shook her head. "I wish I could! Don't you think we'd have had an easier courtship if I could?" "True. But you do know what I'm thinking sometimes."
Jace reached over and traced the lines running across Taryn's forehead. She ran her finger down Taryn's cheek and around her mouth. "I don't have to read your mind, babe." She smiled as she said the term of endearment. "It's written all over your face." She stroked the edge of Taryn's mouth. "When you have something on your mind, your mouth turns down slightly and this tiny line here appears." She lightly stroked her thumb over the edge of Taryn's eyebrows. "And when you're deciding whether or not to tell me something, your brow creases and six little furrows appear here." She ran her fingers over the furrows as she counted them.
"Wow. You really do know me."
Jace shook her head. "I haven't even scratched the surface. I've just picked up a few signs. You must have done the same with me. I watched you pull Cory away the other day when that student was cursing at Terri."
"Oh, I'd forgotten about that. But that doesn't count because you were so easy to read. I think the steam coming out of your ears was a sure sign that you were going to blow your top. But you're right, I have begun to notice when you're not happy or there's something wrong." She placed her hand on Jace's temple. "There's a little vein here that pulses when you're angry or nervous."
Jace placed her fingers where Taryn's had been. "That probably explains the headaches I get! What else?"
"You raise your eyebrows in different ways. When you lift one, it usually means you're confused or thinking. When both are raised, it's usually a sign that you're surprised."
Jace wiggled her eyebrows comically at Taryn. "Anything else?"
Taryn thought for a few seconds, enjoying the intimate moment between them "Oh yeah, you chew your lips when you're thinking about something serious and I'm surprised you have any cheek skin left the way you chomp at it when you're pissed."
"I've never noticed that, but you're right. I do have a tendency to bite my lips or the inside of my cheeks. I've even drawn blood in some meetings when I'm pissed."
When each woman had finished exploring the other's face, Taryn knew she couldn't ignore Jace's concerned expression. "Let's go and sit over on the sofa." Taryn said indicating toward the living room.
Jace picked up the wine bottle and waited for Taryn to move toward the door first. She turned the kitchen light off and walked the short distance to the comfortable leather sofa. After placing the wine bottle on the coffee table, she lowered herself into the plush seat and felt her muscles relax against the soft material. "I love this part of the day. The day is over and your body can just relax and do nothing." She placed her arm around Taryn's shoulder and encouraged the smaller woman to lean against her. She kissed Taryn's head and took a few minutes to enjoy the peace and quiet.
Taryn closed her eyes and let the ministrations of Jace's fingers through her hair soothe her. She liked the rhythmic caress. She had missed this bond between them. Since their adventures in the truck the previous weekend, Jace had made no attempt to take their relationship any further in the physical realm. It was one of the reasons that Taryn hadn't pushed the issue of staying over and had waited for Jace to make the first move. Sleeping together in a house full of kids and people was very different to sleeping together on their own. So far in their time together, they had never spent the night alone in the house and in the same bed. Taryn could feel Jace relax against her and was unsure whether to begin a conversation that she had a feeling would get very emotional. However, she knew that Jace was curious and concerned about what had been on Taryn's mind for a few weeks. Come on. You know what mom used to say, a problem shared was a problem halved. "Are you working the whole vacation?"
Jace opened her eyes. "I usually do. The break is really for faculty and students."
"Oh."
"Why?" The taller woman turned her body slightly so she could see her girlfriend's profile.
Taryn ran her fingers around the rim of her wine glass. "No reason. I was just curious."
"Sure and as Cory would say 'I'm the Queen of England'."
Taryn looked up into concerned eyes. "I didn't want this evening to be about my problems." Jace rubbed Taryn's cheek gently. "Taryn, we've been here before. I know that you have something on your mind. I also know that it's been bothering you for a while. We put off discussing it last week because we wanted to develop things between us. I thought we might have had some time this week, but things got crazy. Jane hinted that you might have something to talk to me about and I was hoping you'd tell me yourself. Now that you've started, I think now is as good a time as any to finish."
Taryn closed her eyes. She had thought of little else all week and had put off phoning her Gram, as she didn't want to upset the older lady. "If your father was ill, would you visit him?"
Jace sucked in her cheeks and chewed slightly on the soft inner flesh. She thought about the question a little and her brows furrowed as she weighed up her options. She could feel Taryn's eyes assess her face. "Tough question."
"I know. Would you go?"
Jace shrugged her shoulders slightly. "It depends. If he asked me to visit, then I think I would go." She saw Taryn's questioning expression and expanded on her answer. "In my book, if he personally asked me to visit then in a way I'd know I was kind of welcome."
Taryn nodded. "That makes sense. What if he didn't ask?"
"It would still depend on how ill he was. If he needed a blood transfusion or a donor from one of his children, then I'd go if I were compatible. It would be some kind of ironic justice that the child he's denied for so long was actually his and saving his life. It wouldn't take the pain away, but then he'd owe me in a crazy way. Does that sound bitter and twisted?"
"No. You'd do that for him?" Taryn asked a little awe in her voice. "Even after all he's put your mother and you through?"
Jace nodded. "Yes." she whispered. "I've always dreamed that one day he would accept me."
Taryn took Jace's hand in hers. "You never know, stranger things have happened."
"No. Even if he did try to make peace, he'd soon change his mind when he knew about this." She raised their joined hands. "I don't think he's the most liberal of thinkers. One day, I hope to visit Nikos and try to get him to see me for who I am, but until then I don't think I'll go back."
"What if he was dying?"
Jace looked into pained eyes. "Taryn, this isn't about what I'd do. Our situations are so different. I escaped my father's grasp years ago and haven't had to endure years of abuse from him. I didn't think you ever wanted to see Patrick again?"
Taryn nodded. "I didn't…. but I found something the other day that made me think things could have been different." She stood up and felt Jace's hand tighten its grip.
"Where are you going?" Jace could hear the panic in her own voice. She hadn't meant to upset her partner.
Taryn saw the confusion in Jace's eyes. "I'm not going anywhere. I just want to get something from the car. I promise I'll be back." She bent down and kissed Jace gently on the lips. "Be right back."
Jace strummed her fingers on the arm of the couch. She had to trust that Taryn would return. The evening had gone in a slightly different direction to what she had planned, but seeing Taryn open up more and more was good. She knew that Taryn's past relationships hadn't worked because of a lack of trust and Jace wanted theirs to be different. She wanted to know everything about Taryn: good and bad. She calmed down when she heard the door shut and the light tap of sneakers on the tiled floor.
Taryn took her seat and passed the wallet over to Jace. "I found these last week."
Jace took the wallet and opened it. She flicked through the contents, recognizing some of the photos as being those that had been scattered on Taryn's bedroom floor.
"They belonged to Patrick. I found them in his desk drawer." She looked guiltily at Jace. "I snooped."
Jace didn't know what to say. She hadn't expected anything like this. She went through the pack and stopped at one photo. "You were a beautiful baby."
"Thank you."
The older woman placed the wallet on the table and looked at her girlfriend. "Was this why you were upset last week?"
Taryn nodded. "Partly. It was a mixture of this and our fight. I was confused."
Jace looked at the wallet. "I can see why. I would be, too. Have you talked to Jane about it?"
The blonde shook her head. "No. I'm a little embarrassed that I stooped so low as to snoop around his things. I just don't know what it means. He has never shown any interest in me, yet these photos go up in age until I started college." She flicked to her graduation picture. "This one is the one that is most significant. Mom or Gram probably gave the other photos to him, but this one had to have been taken by Patrick. My Mom and grandparents were with me in the audience. This shot was taken from a distance and at an angle. He was at my graduation, Jace."
"How do you feel about him?"
"I still despise him."
"Do you want to see him?"
Taryn shook her head vehemently. "No."
Jace stroked her hand over Taryn's back, slowly massaging the tight muscles. "Well, there's your answer."
Taryn shook her head. "I wish it was." She dropped her head into her hands and closed her eyes. She could feel Jace's touch on her back and it helped to ground her thoughts. She took a few moments to think about what she really wanted. "I just want the truth, Jace. Part of me never wants to see the guy again. Another part of me wants to ask him why. This could be my last chance to get any answers." She tried to calm the nerves fluttering around in her stomach. "I'm scared."
"I would be, too." Jace moved her hand to the base of Taryn's neck. She gripped the skin firmly and worked out the kink that she felt there.
"God, that feels so good." Taryn felt the hand still. "Don't stop! Please." She dropped her head further forward and tried to stifle a groan as Jace loosened a particularly tight spot. "Gram wants me to forgive Patrick." Taryn continued.
"Is that what Jane talked to you about?"
Taryn moved her head from side-to-side. The muscles were definitely more relaxed. "Thanks." She picked up her wineglass and turned to face her girlfriend.
"Yeah. She's worried about Gram. Apparently, Gram isn't coping too well. This will be the second son she's buried and in her books, parents were not meant to bury their children. Gram thinks if I forgive Patrick, then he'll stand a better chance of going to Heaven."
"Or he could confess his sins to a priest and ask for forgiveness."
"True. I think in Gram's mind its one more try to get peace between us." Taryn took Jace's hand and looked closely at the various patterns that swirled over her palm and down into the fingers. She traced over the top of the fingers and back down the hand. Jace's fingers looked delicate, but Taryn had just experienced the hidden strength in them. "Jane's worried about Gram's blood pressure. She thinks if I go to Florida it will help lower it. While I may hate Patrick and owe him nothing, I love my grandparents and if there is something I can do to relieve their pain, I feel like I should do it. I owe them so much."
"That's not really fair of them, Taryn. They're using emotional blackmail on you. You have to make the decision for your own peace of mind." She empathized with Taryn and knew there was no answer that would make everyone happy.
"I know. When Jane first told me, I wasn't happy, but the more I think about it, the more confused I become. I wanted to see what you thought."
Jace shook her head. "I can't tell you what to do." She watched Taryn drop her head. Immediately, she placed her hand under Taryn's chin and lifted her head so she could look into eyes brimming with tears. "But I can support you and be there for you. If you decide to go to Florida and need someone to lean on, then I'm your woman. We'll make the trip together."
Taryn's emotions did a somersault at the words. Her nerves disappeared and were replaced with a tickling, giddy sensation. She smiled appreciatively at Jace. "I think that's what I wanted to hear all along. Thanks." She wiped her eyes as the tears flowed.
"Hey. I made you cry!"
"Happy tears. Happy tears are good, Jace. It's just nice to hear that someone is there for me and I'm not alone anymore."
Jace wrapped her arms around Taryn. "I hope you'll never be alone again. I…I love you." She hadn't said the words to Taryn since their initial declaration and she enjoyed hearing them roll off her tongue.
"Good because I am hopelessly head over heels in love with you, too."
Jace lowered her head and kissed Taryn's lips. She could taste the slight hint of wine and deepened the kiss. Her tongue pressed against the barrier of teeth and she groaned when she felt Taryn open her mouth slightly and allow her access.
Taryn tried to quell her emotions and desire. Her nerves were sensitive and every motion of Jace against her body made her want more. She could feel firm hands roam over her back and down her side. She didn't want them to stop and she knew that she'd have to remain conscious of where her hands were going if she wanted Jace to keep kissing her.
Jace felt Taryn's hands lock around her neck. She opened her eyes and through slightly blurred vision saw that Taryn's eyes were shut. She broke the kiss and waited for Taryn's eyes to meet her own. "We could continue this…" She hesitated slightly. "In the bedroom…if you want?"
"I want." Taryn admitted hoarsely. She climbed off Jace's sprawled body and helped to pull the taller woman to her feet. "Lead the way."
Jace tried to control her nerves and the trembling quivers that were making their way down her legs. She pushed the bedroom door open and indicated that Taryn could enter.
The younger, but more experienced, woman observed her partner's nervous composure. She stopped short of the bed and drew Jace toward her. "Hey."
Jace looked shyly at Taryn. "Hey yourself."
The two women met each other in a kiss. Both women explored the other's face. Each planted tiny kisses over cheeks, lips, and brows.
Taryn could feel the bed against the back of her legs. She lowered herself slowly onto the bed never losing contact with Jace. She could feel the taller woman crawl onto the bed next to her and with a slight movement to her left, Taryn wrapped her arms around her girlfriend's back and neck, and resumed the kissing. When she felt Jace relax against her, she moved one of her hands to the front of Jace's shirt and left it there, patiently waiting for the dark-haired woman to open her eyes. She wasn't left waiting long and looked into the gentle eyes of the woman she loved. Her fingers were poised over the first button on Jace's shirt. "May I?" She dropped her eyes to the button and her hand.
Jace lost the power of speech the moment that she felt Taryn's hand on the front of her shirt. She had hoped Taryn would take the lead, but now her blood was racing and she felt slightly disorientated from nerves and emotions. "Be…my…guest." She stuttered. When Taryn's fingers didn't move, Jace looked down at the hand and back to Taryn's questioning eyes. She could tell that Taryn was patiently waiting for a more convincing answer. She nodded and was delighted to see a smile grace Taryn's face.
Take it slow! Do not rush her! One button at a time! Taryn had never been known for her patience in the bedroom and she was fighting the urge to just rip the shirt off Jace's body. Instead, she tentatively undid the first button. She could feel Jace's intense gaze on her and she lifted her eyes to maintain eye contact. When she had the buttons undone, she moved forward and resumed their kissing. As she felt Jace's tongue probe her mouth, she slowly pushed the shirt open and felt bare skin against her hand.
Jace tried not to gasp as she felt the cold air rush over her exposed skin. She knew she had to trust Taryn's judgment. The blonde had told her often enough what a great body she had and she wanted to believe her. She felt her shirt being tugged gently off her body and she willingly allowed Taryn to undress her. She was very aware of the warm hands that danced across her skin, making a northward journey toward her breasts. When she could no longer feel the cotton fabric against her skin, she felt a little self-conscious. She didn't want to be the only person without their top. Her hands moved to the edge of Taryn's sweater and she slowly moved the material up. She could feel Taryn arch her back, which allowed the sweater to come off more easily. Jace lifted the front of the shirt over Taryn's head. Then for the first time since beginning the disrobing, she opened her eyes and looked down at the white skin before her. "You're beautiful!" Her eyes focused on the black silk bra that stood out in stark contrast against the pale skin. Tentatively at first, her fingers moved toward the edge of the material. Summoning up all of her courage, she stroked the silk material. With each stroke, her motions became more confident and soon she was fondling the supple breast. Her eyes never left her hand and she watched as the nipple pushed against the material. She swallowed the saliva that had pooled in her mouth and looked at Taryn. "Can I?" Her fingers were poised to delve into the cup of the bra.
Taryn nodded. "I have a better idea. How about we take it off and you can have full access." She winked playfully, trying to maintain a light atmosphere. She didn't want to stop what they were doing. To her amazement, the slow agonizing steps that Jace was taking were actually arousing her more and more. There was no frustration in her body and she was incredibly aroused as she watched her girlfriend's confidence growing. When there was no answer from Jace, Taryn took the silence as a yes and swiftly unhooked her bra.
Jace felt all the liquid in her body head south. She had seen breasts before, but none had had the kind of affect on her body as the tantalizing pair in front of her was having. She could see the pert nipples calling out to her and like a spaceship caught in a tractor beam, her hands moved forward. She captured one of the nipples between her fingers and instinctively squeezed. She heard Taryn gasp and looked up apologetically. "Sorry." She withdrew her hand.
Taryn felt the fingers release her breast. "No, no, no. Keep it there. You didn't hurt me." She saw Jace's eyebrow lift. "I'll show you." She reached forward and gently stroked the top of Jace's cotton bra. She could feel the nipple respond to her touch and she increased the pressure until she heard Jace suck in a deep breath. "Feel good?"
"Yes!" Jace gasped, surprised at her body's reaction to the gentle touch.
Taryn could feel the pulsing in her groin. She knew that if things carried on the way they were that it wouldn't take long for her over aroused body to reach its destination. She closed her eyes as she felt Jace's hand continue with its gentle exploration and every touch was helping to keep the desire fully ignited within her. Her own hands joined in and the two women spent a good amount of time studying the other woman's curves and sensitive spots. When the urge to kiss Jace's breasts got too much for the experienced woman, she gently leaned forward and kissed the swell just above Jace's breast. "I want to kiss these, Jace. I need to kiss them."
Jace heard the desperate words and knew that she couldn't deny Taryn anything. The woman had been more than patient with her. "Okay." She felt the material over her breasts give way as the blonde deftly unclipped the bra with one swift motion. "Impressive!" She drawled into her girlfriend's ear, feeling dizzily intoxicated by the whole situation.
Taryn giggled nervously, somehow she had the feeling that their roles were suddenly reversed. "A girl's got to have a few tricks up her sleeve." She took in the darker skin of Jace's aureole and licked her lips. She lowered her head and gently sucked in the hardened nipple. She could feel Jace's heartbeat against her hand and felt the taller woman hold her breath. She licked the area and placed gentle kisses around the soft skin before taking the nipple back into her mouth. She alternated between sucking and gentling biting it.
Jace felt Taryn's teeth graze her skin and the sensation shot straight to her already engorged clitoris. She knew she was swollen and the pressure of her jeans against the sensitive area only intensified her need. She felt herself strain against the seam of her pants as Taryn's sucking increased. She gasped when she felt tremors travel throughout her groin and into the pit of her stomach. Her body shook and the blood rushed to her head. Her body shook a few more times. The suckling on her breast was suddenly sensitive and she placed her hand against Taryn's face. "Who…a." She stammered, a little uncertain about what had happened.
Taryn had felt the shudders of Jace's body and had increased her sucking and biting. She had been tempted to stop, but when Jace had shown signs of no turning back, Taryn had decided to try and make Jace's first orgasm a good one. She pulled her lover into her. "I've got you. It feels good, doesn't it?"
Jace let herself be held. She liked feeling Taryn's breasts against her face and she needed time to calm her heart and mind. Breathe! Just breathe in and out! The last thing she needs is you fainting on her!
Taryn stroked Jace's bare back and tried to take her mind off the pulse she still felt between her legs. The innocent, but deep breathing of her partner against her naked breasts was intensifying her own need. She knew she was becoming frustrated and needed to release the pressure before she literally exploded. She lifted Jace's chin and looked into uncertain eyes. "Are you okay?"
Jace nodded mutely.
"I…err…I need to come, Jace. I thought I could control myself better, but I can't. It hurts."
Jace lifted her head concerned at Taryn's frank statement. "I'm sorry. I didn't think how this would affect you."
Taryn kissed Jace's lips. "Shushhh. I don't think you're ready to touch me, are you?"
Jace lowered her eyes to Taryn's groin and shook her head disappointed in her own cowardice.
Taryn lay on her back and pulled Jace slightly on top of her. She waited until Jace made eye contact with her. "Hey, no big deal that's why I was given my own hands. If it's okay with you I could touch myself while you kiss me." She saw the uncertainty flicker across Jace's eyes. "Or I could go to the bathroom and we forget I mentioned anything." Jace closed her eyes and lowered her mouth to Taryn's She hoped that her actions would speak louder than her words.
Taryn kept one arm securely wrapped around her girlfriend's torso. With the other hand, she undid her fly and slipped the hand inside. She slipped her finger into the wetness and stroked it over her enlarged clit. As she rocked against her own hand, she felt Jace deepen and quicken the pace of their kisses. It didn't take more than a few strokes before Taryn felt the initial stirrings of her orgasm. She broke her kiss and looked into pale blue eyes. "I love you, Jace." She uttered and closed her eyes to fully experience the mind blowing orgasm.
Jace watched on, fascinated by Taryn's facial expressions. At first it looked like the blonde was in pain, but soon the slight grimace turned into a relaxed expression as Taryn breathed in a deep breath and her body bucked slightly in Jace's arms. She waited until the shudders slowed down and Taryn's eyes opened. "I love you, too."
Taryn shook her head slightly and tried to focus her eyes on Jace's beautiful smile. "Want to go to sleep?"
Jace nodded. "I'm not sure sleep is at the top of my agenda, but I could definitely do with getting out of these jeans and underwear."
Taryn grinned. "I hear you. Jace, I don't have any pajamas. Can I borrow a t-shirt?"
Jace shook her head, an evil glint in her eyes. "Nope." She watched as Taryn frowned. "I can lend you a pair of pajama bottoms, but I'm kind of getting used to seeing those pert breasts smiling at me." The blush that tinged her cheeks betrayed her confident manner.
Taryn giggled. "My, my, someone definitely is getting a little cocky!"
"I've been told I'm a fast learner." Jace cocked Taryn a smirk, which changed into a shy smile. "I like feeling your breasts against mine. Is that okay?"
Taryn kissed her girlfriend gently on the lips. "That's fine by me. I hate sleeping in clothes and pajama bottoms are one step away from being naked!" She flicked one of Jace's nipples with her fingertip and winked at her blushing lover. "I'm off to the bathroom. You can join me, if you want?"
Jace watched as Taryn wiggled her cute ass. She flopped back onto bed with an inane grin plastered on her face.
Chapter 29
"Are you sure about this?"
Taryn blew out a frustrated, nervous breath. "Jace, you've asked me that question all day and my answer is still the same." She took a deep breath and continued. "No, I'm not sure about this, but it's a bit too late to be changing my mind now." She felt Taylor grab her hand as the jet engines came to life and smiled encouragingly at the boy sitting beside her. "Hold on tight, Tay."
Jace took a hold of Taryn's spare hand and squeezed it. "Have I told you I hate flying?" She gave her girlfriend a sheepish smile.
The blonde shook her head. "I'm not sure who the bigger child is!" She lifted their joined hands and kissed the back of Jace's hand. "Thank you." Taryn closed her eyes as she felt the airplane speed down the runway. Please let us be okay! Oh my…God!! She felt the plane lift off the ground. Both Jace and Taylor were squeezing her hands. "Hey guys, I need some circulation in my fingers." She felt Taylor's hand relax in hers, but Jace's did not move. She opened her eyes and looked at the grimace on Jace's face. "Jace, look at me!" She stated rather sternly. Her words were interrupted by a loud bang emanating from under the plane.
Jace nearly jumped out of her seat when she heard the noise. "Shit!" Jace exclaimed. "What was that?"
Taryn shook her head and tried to stifle a giggle. "That was just the landing gear. I think I'm seeing a totally different side to you. How did you cope traveling to and from California and Greece?"
Jace tried to gather her composure and not appear as a total dork in front of her girlfriend. "Tylenol PM, a flyer's best friend!" She relaxed against her seat, trying to block out the rumbling of the engines. A loud shout from behind her made Jace crane her neck around.
"Sit on Auntie Jace's lap now."
Jane ruffled her son's hair. "Tom, we have to wait for the pilot to turn the sign off." She pointed to the seatbelt sign and waited for her youngest boy to point at it. "That's right. When the light goes off we can all move around." She placed a Thomas the Tank Engine book in front of him and looked out of the window as Josie pointed out the world below them.
Taryn could feel Jace's hand loosen. She closed her eyes and tried to think of what she would say to Patrick when she saw him. Her decision time had been cut short at the end of the first week of spring break. Jane had informed her that Patrick's health had deteriorated and the news that he didn't have much time left had caused her Gram to have a very minor stroke. The old woman had been taken to the local hospital. When Taryn had heard the news, she knew she had to do something to make her Gram feel better, even if it did feel like she was selling her soul to the devil. She had spoken to Jane and agreed to make the journey. Jane had booked tickets on the next available flight for herself, Taryn, and the kids after talking to Jace. Even though Jace had promised they'd make the trip together, Taryn had been surprised and extremely pleased when Jace had insisted she was making the trip, too. Taryn heard the beep that indicated the seatbelt light had been turned off and she opened her eyes.
"Auntie Jace light off. Sit on lap?"
Jace undid her seatbelt and stood up in the aisle. "Come on, buddy." She waited for Jane to undo his seatbelt and then picked up the young boy. "Let's see what has happened to Thomas and Percy." She took the book that Jane offered and nodded her thanks.
"Percy covered in chocolate. Look Percy got chocolate all over!" Tom exclaimed excitedly.
"Thanks, Jace." Jane grinned as she heard her son's happy chattering. She welcomed a few moments to rest her eyes. Her daughter was quietly listening to music on her stereo. The three children had argued about who was going to sit in the seat next to Taryn and Jace. Finally, in the airport restaurant, Jane had ended the arguments by cutting a straw into three pieces and making all three children pick a piece. To Taylor's delight, he had drawn the short straw that had guaranteed him a seat next to his best friend. Jane looked at the blonde spiky head of her niece. Then she turned her attention to the dark head of hair in front of her. She had noticed a definite change in Jace since coming home. The tall woman had been spending more time at their house and while Jane liked seeing her friend and colleague, a little twinge of jealousy had arisen when she realized that those visits weren't necessarily to see her. With Bill away, Jane had been lonely and in need of company in the long evenings when the kids were in bed. In the past, Jace had always provided her with the companionship she craved. Now, however, Jace's time had been spent with Taryn and the two would often disappear up into Taryn's room or out to watch a movie. Jane didn't begrudge her friend's new love; she just missed the unique bond that they had once had.
Jace rocked the young charge in her arms and read the book quietly. The further into the story, the more relaxed she felt Tom become. When she closed the book she could hear the tiny snores of the youngster. "Works every time." She whispered to Taryn.
Taryn rubbed Jace's arm affectionately. "You're a miracle worker. So, the fact that it's past seven and very dark outside has nothing to do with it, huh?"
Jace nudged her elbow lightly into Taryn's side, delighted to hear a lightness in her girlfriend's voice. "Spoilsport!"
Taryn lifted the armrest that separated Taylor's chair from her own. "How are you doing, Tay?"
Blue eyes lifted her way. "I'm tired." He rubbed his eyes as if to emphasize his point.
Taryn lifted her arm and indicated that Taylor should cuddle up to her. "I think you should try to sleep. We still have a few hours on the plane and then an hour's drive to the hotel." She stroked Taylor's hair and traced patterns over his shoulder, soothing the little boy into the land of slumber. Taryn leaned over and whispered in Jace's ear, "See I have magic fingers, too!"
Jace blushed when her thoughts turned south. She felt Taryn's head come to rest against her shoulder and she smiled with contentment. The past week had been wonderful. Every day they had spent quality time together and a majority of the evenings they had fallen asleep wrapped in each other's arms. Taryn had been patient with her and she had taken to exploring Taryn's body a little more every time. They had yet to mutually make love to each other; however, Jace was beginning to feel confident and had taken to initiating their make-out sessions.
***
The humid Florida air felt good against her skin. Jace looked out onto the hotel swimming pool. The weather was beautiful and made a refreshing change to the Massachusetts wind and rain. She heard her name being yelled and waved to Taylor, watching as he jumped off the diving board and into the pool. She waved at Taryn, delighting in the skimpy bikini that her lover was wearing. She heard a knock on the door and walked back inside the hotel room. She opened the door. "Hey."
"I thought you'd be down by the pool." Jane commented as she entered the bedroom with Tom.
Jace swung Tom into the air and kissed the boy's cheek. "Taryn let me lie in. I wasn't feeling very well this morning." She saw the concerned look on Jane's face. "Nothing serious just a headache and a few pre-period cramps. I took some pills and went back to sleep. Taryn's down at the pool with Taylor and Josie."
Jane nodded. "I know, I saw them when we pulled up."
Jace grabbed her towel and sun cream. "Are you coming to the pool?"
"Yeah. I have to change into my bathing suit and change Tom as well."
Jace grabbed her hotel card and sunglasses. "I'll come and help you." She followed Jane out of her room and into the next. The room was set up the same as hers and Taryn's, except there was a pull out couch already set up as a bed.
Jane dropped her pocket book onto her bed and tried to hold back the tears that had threatened to fall while she had visited her frail mother. She watched as Jace changed her son into a special swimming diaper and then his swimming shorts. "He's so excited about going swimming."
"You could have left him with us, too."
"Mom was delighted to see him. I promised her that Taylor and Josie would visit later with Taryn. They've restricted her visitors to two people at a time and Tom was the least resistant of the three. All Josie and Taylor wanted to do was swim and hang out with you guys."
"How's your mom doing?" Jace could see Jane's shoulders slump and took in the bags under her friend's eyes. She had resisted saying anything to Jane about the emotional blackmail she felt they were using to pressure Taryn into visiting Patrick. She hadn't wanted to choose sides and she knew in her heart that Jane was just trying to please an old lady.
Jane shook her head. "She looks beaten, although she brightened up when I told her Taryn was here. She's annoyed that the doctors won't let her out of the hospital."
Jace placed Tom on the floor and took a seat on the bed next to Jane. "Did the stroke do any damage?"
Jane patted Jace's leg. "Thanks for changing him. Sometimes, I don't know what we'd do without you." She burst into tears and sobbed on her best friend's shoulder.
Jace rubbed Jane's back and kissed the top of her head. She smiled reassuringly at Tom as the little boy looked on at his distressed mother. "I'm here for you, Jane. Give me two seconds and I'm all yours." She rubbed Jane's back one more time, then stood up, and passed the box of tissues to her crying friend. She walked over to the balcony doors. After opening the doors and stepping out into the warm sun, she shouted out Josie's name.
After instructing Josie to come upstairs and collect her brother, and telling Taryn to meet the kids at the elevator, Jace got Tom's 'swimmies' and blew each one up, placing them on the confused boy's arms. "Josie is going to come and take you to Taryn. Auntie Jace is going to stay and talk with Mommy. She has a boo-boo here." Jace placed her hand on Tom's heart. "And Auntie Jace is going to make it better, okay?"
The two-year-old looked over at his upset mother. "Okay. Tom be good, Mommy. Pwomise."
Jane's tears intensified as she heard the loving words. "I know you will, darling. You are such a good boy."
Jace walked Tom into the hallway and instructed Josie not to let go of his hand until she was with Taryn. When the two children were safely in the elevator, she went back into the room and closed the door. She took her friend into her arms and felt Jane crumple against her. Supporting Jane's frame against her own body, she rocked Jane comfortingly and kissed her head as a sign of empathy. Jace just held her friend. She had no words to convey her thoughts. When she thought of Patrick dying, it actually made her feel relieved rather than sad. She knew he had tormented Taryn's life and with him gone, she hoped her girlfriend would finally value herself for the wonderful woman she was. However, she could see the toll Patrick's illness was having on Jane as she tried valiantly to keep her family from falling apart.
After a few minutes, Jace felt Jane's body regain some composure and she felt her pull away slightly. "Everything is going to be okay, Jane."
Jane wiped an arm across her eyes and then smiled up at her friend. "Thank you. I think I just needed to get it out."
Jace relaxed her hold on Jane. "No worries. You've always been there for me. You didn't finish telling me about your mom."
"She looked so weak, Jace. The stroke was mild and the doctor's think she'll regain full control of the left side of her body, especially her hand. I'm just worried about what's going to happen when Patrick dies."
"How is he?"
Jane shook her head and closed her eyes. She didn't want to cry anymore. After taking a few calming breathes, she reopened her eyes and focused on the view outside the patio window. She could hear the faint cries of delight and shrieks of laughter that she knew were being generated by her children. "He's not looking very good. I didn't recognize him. It's amazing how different someone can look in over a week. He's jaundiced and the doctors don't hold out much hope that he'll make it past the weekend."
"That soon?" Jace asked. She was amazed at how quickly the disease had ravaged Patrick's body.
Jane nodded. She turned her attention back to Jace. "He has known for a while. Dad didn't realize the extent until mid-week. We knew he'd been told to take tablets, but apparently the doctors had already given Patrick a terminal diagnosis. My brother decided he could beat the odds. Always a gambler!"
"Oh."
Jane knew that Jace was struggling to find something to say about Patrick. Since hearing about Patrick's past and his reactions to Taryn, Jace hadn't had anything good to say about Patrick. She didn't blame Jace, if it had been anybody other than her brother, she'd probably have done the same thing. Her friend definitely looked awkward standing in the middle of the room. She watched as Jace rocked back and forth from her heels to the balls of her feet. Jane looked back at the balcony and patio seating. "Do you mind if we sit on the balcony? I just need a little time to compose myself before I talk to Taryn and the kids."
Jace nodded her agreement and followed Jane out onto the balcony. At least she could still watch Taryn from this distance.
Jane settled into her seat and watched her children frolic in the pool with their cousin. "Taryn looks very happy."
Jace smiled as she took in Taryn's scantily clad body. The last time she had seen Taryn in a swimsuit had been the Labor Day cookout. She ran her eyes up and down the slender body. Over the past week, they had taken to sleeping in less clothing. Gone were the pajama bottoms to be replaced by just their panties or boxer shorts. Jace had still to overcome her fear of being totally naked with Taryn. Their lovemaking had focused mainly on Jace's comfort level and while she had investigated Taryn's body for sensitive spots and erogenous zones, she hadn't touched Taryn below the waistband. Jace had made some progress. After a little encouragement from Taryn, she had followed Taryn's lead and touched herself. She blushed at the memory and felt Jane's eyes on her. Nervously, she shifted in her seat. She has no idea what you're thinking! Quit wriggling around. She'll start asking questions if you don't answer her soon. Snap out of it, Xanthos! "She does, doesn't she?"
Jane scrutinized Jace's features. She watched her friend's facial expression turn from happiness to thoughtfulness. She could see her colleague slightly frown and then blush. Ooh, what is going on inside your mind, Jace Xanthos? "You're good for her."
"I hope so." Jace commented wistfully.
Jane shook her head in disbelief. "When are you going to value yourself? Taryn's a different woman since she met you. Her confidence has improved and so has her anger management."
It was Jace's turn to shake her head. "Jane, I'm not the whole reason, although I hope I am a little part of it. I think being back where she belongs, in a loving family, has helped immensely. Bill's acceptance of her sexuality and our relationship has really boosted her." She paused for a second, reluctant to say what was on her mind, not wanting to upset Jane. "And, as unfortunate and upsetting as Patrick's illness is for you and your parents, I think his absence has helped Taryn to move on. She's over the moon to be living with you guys."
"She is?" Jane asked incredulously.
"You sound surprised." Jace waved in response as she caught sight of Taylor waving madly in their direction. She saw Taryn's non-verbal gesture asking when she was going to join them. Jace held up both hands and spread her fingers. She then flashed the hands twice at Taryn indicating she needed twenty more minutes with Jane.
"I'm just a little surprised because she only spent three nights in the house this week and when she was home, she was upstairs with you."
Jace swallowed guiltily and cleared her throat. "Err...that could be partly my fault. We…err…we felt a little awkward being together with the kids down the hallway."
"You lost your virginity!" Jane exclaimed excitedly.
Jace waved her arms in front of Jane. "Whoa! I don't think Bill heard you in New York!"
"I'm sorry." Jane tried to act sheepishly, but the beaming grin on her face betrayed her real feelings.
"Yeah, and I'm the President of the United States. I know that grin, Jane, and that grin tells me that you want all the juicy details, but I have no gossip." She lowered her voice. "And no, technically I am still a virgin."
"What do mean by technically?"
"Jane!" Jace warned.
"Oh, come on. Just a little information." Jane held her thumb and forefinger up a little apart from each other. "Please. Your girlfriend has slept at your house every other night. Please don't pretend you watched DVDs and played Scrabble all week!"
Jace grinned devilishly at her friend. "Maybe." She teased, but she could see the determined expression on Jane's face. She knew her friend was like a heat-seeking missile when she got into the mood. Nothing except the truth would deter Jane's line of questioning. She also liked seeing the twinkle of joy in her friend's eyes that had been missing over the last three weeks. "Jane, Taryn's been great with me and very patient. We've spent a lot of the week getting used to each other's bodies."
"And?"
"And what?" Jace gave Jane a puzzled expression.
"Details, Jace."
"Do you remember when you first started dating Bill?" She watched Jane nod. "Did you have sex with him straight away?"
Jane blushed. "No!"
"So, why do you assume Taryn and I would? I bet you and Bill fooled around a little and got used to each others bodies, didn't you?" She watched the flush rise in Jane's cheeks. "I knew it!"
"Okay, I'll admit we did some pretty heated investigations. So, have you…you know what?"
Jace shook her head. "Jane, I feel like I'm having a conversation with the kids. Quit talking in code. If you have a specific question then just spit it out. God, I can see where Taryn gets her evasive questioning skills from."
Jane looked embarrassed. "I'm sorry. Suddenly I feel like I'm back in my teenage years and I'm trying to glean information from my girlfriends after they'd been out on a date." She paused momentarily. "I wanted to ask if you'd had…if you'd…well…you know."
Jace watched as Jane refused to make eye contact with her. She let the older woman squirm a little more before putting the woman out of her misery. "Yes. I have had an orgasm. In fact, more than one; yes, they were awesome; and yes, I can see what all the fuss is about." She smiled sweetly at Jane, daring her to ask any more questions.
"How did you know I was going to ask those questions?"
Jace winked at her friend cockily. "Because I know you. Seriously, Jane, I'm not trying to keep things from you and I value our friendship. I'm just getting used to being with someone and my sex life isn't as straightforward as I would like it. If I were with anyone other than your niece, I'd probably be analyzing with you everything Taryn and I have done. However, she is your niece and I would feel better if Taryn was either here or that she was the one to divulge the intimate details. I know you and Taryn have an open relationship, but I can't help thinking how I'd feel if my aunt knew about my bedroom activities." She shuddered at the mere thought.
Jane sighed. "I know. I just feel a little out of the loop. Over the past few years, I've enjoyed being the one you turned to or hung out with. And no matter how old one gets, nobody likes it when their friends move on and settle down."
Jace saw the sadness linger on Jane's face. She reached out an arm and stroked Jane's cheek. "Jane, I'll always love you and you'll always be my best friend. I remember a time when you were practically my only friend and I'll never ever be able to repay you for taking me in and giving me a family." She moved the few inches it took to hug Jane. "Thank you. "She whispered into the crying woman's ear.
Chapter 30
The afternoon sun beat down on the small group as they mingled outside of the hospital. The Weston family, Jace and Taryn had enjoyed a mid-morning and early afternoon of fun in the sun. Jace and Jane had joined up with the kids and Taryn and spent a few hours swimming, sunbathing and generally enjoying the sun they had missed in the winter months of Massachusetts. Taryn looked around the entrance hall of the large hospital. She smiled as she saw the familiar mop of gray hair. "Hey, Gramps."
"Gramps!" Taylor and Josie screeched and ran to their grandfather.
The old man bent down and hugged each child before taking his oldest grandchild in his arms. "Thank you for coming. She's very excited. How long has it been since we saw you last?"
Taryn hung her head. "Too long. I'm sorry."
Her grandfather pulled her back into the hug. "Well, it's good to see you and you look great." He released Taryn and held out his hand to Jace, surprised to see her accompanying his grandchildren. "Nice to see you again, Jace."
"Good to see you too, sir."
"I've told you before to call me Pat."
"Can we see Gram now?" Josie asked impatiently.
"Sure you can." Her grandfather ruffled her hair. "I think you've grown a good two inches since last summer. You two are going to catch up on my little squirt here!"
"Gramps!" Taryn warned the older man to watch what he was saying, but when she heard the giggling from her girlfriend she knew her old nickname was never going to be forgotten."
"Squirt?"
Taryn's grandfather beamed with pride, as Taryn tried to avoid Jace's questioning words. "I was a small baby."
"And child! She's still the best little squirt in the world."
Jace watched Taryn's face. Try as hard as she did, Jace could tell that Taryn was enjoying the teasing as it showed how much her grandfather loved her. "You've got that right, sir!" The words flew automatically from Jace's mouth and she saw the old man's eyes widen with surprise.
Mr. Walton led the visiting party into the elevator. They exited on the tenth floor and he walked the group over to the nurses' station. After introducing Jace and Taryn to the chief nurse, he took the younger grandchildren in to visit their Gram.
Jace leaned against the wall and looked around. No matter how homey they tried to make hospital wards, they never quite succeeded. The antiseptic smell always lingered and in this ward it seemed to nearly overwhelm her sensitive senses. After a few minutes, she followed Taryn's lead and took a seat opposite the room where Taryn's grandmother lay. She patted her girlfriend's leg. "How are you doing?"
"I'm okay."
Jace took one of Taryn's hands in her own. She wanted to give her as much support as she could. "Taryn, no matter what anyone says or does, only you can decide what is best for you. Remember, your Gram wants what's best for her and Patrick. It might not be the best thing for you."
Taryn stared at the checkered black and white tiles of the waiting room floor. She knew what Jace was trying to say. She squeezed her partner's hand in response. "I know." She looked up as her grandfather came out of the room. "How is she?"
"She looks happier." The old man's eyes drifted to his granddaughter's hand. He could tell from watching the body language of the women that they were very good friends, but there was something possessive and protective in the manner that Jace was holding his grandchild's hand and the penetrating look he was receiving from her. He cleared his throat before speaking. "I'd like to talk to you, Ryn before you go in and see your Gram."
Taryn tightened her grip on Jace's hand before she reluctantly let go. "Sure." She stood and squeezed Jace's shoulder. "Be back in a minute. Keep an eye on the kids for me."
Jace bit back her comment. She was very aware that Taryn's grandfather was watching their every move. "Okay."
Taryn walked down the corridor with her grandfather. She waited patiently for the old man to speak.
"Ryn, I just wanted you to know that I'm not happy with what your Gram wants you to do."
Taryn's head snapped up as she heard the words. "You're not?"
"No. Patrick's made his own bed and it's time for him to lie in it. He's my son, but I'm not proud of him. I've never said this to you before and I should have. If I had my way, he would have been tossed out on the street for his behavior toward you and your mom. In my book, he deserves everything he's been given, but your Gram only sees her little boy. I just wanted you to know that I'll support you in whatever decision you choose."
Taryn nodded in response unable to speak because of the huge lump that had formed in her throat. Her grandfather had always expressed his love for her, but he had never actually told her what he thought of his son's behavior. "Thanks, Gramps. It means a lot to me."
"Squirt, I know that you're battling with what's right for your Gram and what's right for you. I just didn't want you to think that I'd disapprove of you if you didn't go and see him. I personally think your Gram is asking too much of you. Now don't you go and tell her that I said that! She'd kick my ass back to Massachusetts!"
Taryn giggled at the comment. "I promise."
They stopped by the large window and looked out at the sprawling city below them. The couple stood in companionable silence. Taryn had missed the calming presence of her grandfather. He had always been there for her as a child. When she had played softball, the older man had attended every game and taken her to the mall for ice cream afterwards. After a few minutes, Taryn looked back down the corridor and saw the long legs of her girlfriend stretched out.
Pat Walton watched his granddaughter, as she looked down the long corridor. He had tried to support her in every way, always trying to make up for his son's unfortunate behavior. When he had found out about Taryn's choice in partners, he hadn't been happy, but he had tried to be there for her. He still didn't understand what people saw in someone of the same sex. However, Taryn had already been dealt a bad hand of cards and she didn't need some old bigot telling her what was right or wrong. Over time, he had begun to read up more on the subject and had hoped that one day Taryn would find someone special. "It's good of Jace to come down to Florida with you guys. She's kind of family, I guess."
Taryn thought about the comment. It was true. Jace did act like she was part of the family and in everyone else's eyes she probably was. "Yeah."
"You like her, don't you?"
Taryn's eyes snapped back to her grandfather. She flushed red. She had never discussed girlfriends or lovers with her grandfather. She nodded and found making eye contact with the older man difficult. "Yeah."
"Does she like you?"
This comment did cause Taryn to look into brown eyes similar to her own. She cocked an eyebrow at her grandfather. "Yeah."
"She's Jane's boss, isn't she?"
Taryn grinned. "You know she is and she's mine, too. Gramps, you've known Jace longer than I have. She's Tom's godmother. If you've got something to say just say it."
Pat thought back to the two women's postures as he had come out of his wife's room. "You two together?"
Taryn squinted at her grandfather and poked her tongue out slightly as she tried to work out what her grandfather was getting at. "Yeah. Is that okay?"
Pat pulled his granddaughter into a huge bear hug and kissed her head. "Ryn, you never have to ask me that. Does she make you happy?"
Taryn wrapped her arms around her grandfather and breathed in the scent she always associated with him. If she closed her eyes, she could remember times in her past where she had been this close to him. She remembered bedtime stories and pretend horse back rides in the park. "She makes me very happy."
"You think she's the one?" Pat looked into the teary eyes of his little girl.
Taryn nodded. "I hope so, Gramps."
Patrick Walton held his granddaughter in a loving hug. He looked down the corridor and met concerned eyes. He held up a hand to Jace and looked down at the blonde head resting on his shoulder. "She's a keeper, Ryn. I know she's always been there for our Jane and from the looks of things she's about to march down this corridor and make sure I'm not hurting you!"
Taryn turned to look down the corridor and signaled to Jace that she could join them.
Jace didn't need to be asked twice. She had been watching the interactions of the two Walton's from afar and could tell from Taryn's body language that she was upset. She had tried not to look too concerned, but her need to be with Taryn had overridden her. When she had seen the taller man take Taryn into her arms, Jace's instinct had been to run to her girlfriend and protect her. She hoped the man wasn't trying to convince Taryn to speak to Patrick when she wasn't sure what she wanted to do.
Taryn took Jace's hand as soon as she was in reach. She looked into concerned eyes and tried to show through her smile that the tears were from happiness. "Gramps was just telling me that he didn't want me to feel forced into making a decision."
Jace turned thankful eyes on Pat Walton. "Thank you, sir."
Taryn's grandfather patted Jace on the back. "It's me who should be thanking you. I haven't seen my granddaughter look this happy in a long time. She was telling me that you're the one that's put the smile back in her heart."
Jace didn't know where to focus her eyes. She flashed them quickly at Taryn and saw a huge grin on her girlfriend's face. Then she looked at Pat Walton and saw only sincerity there. She held out her hand. "She makes me very happy, too."
"Well, I'd better go and make sure those two young ones haven't worn your Gram out. She'll kill me if she doesn't get to see her number one granddaughter."
Jace waited for the man to walk further down the corridor before taking Taryn into her arms. "That was a surprise. I didn't think they knew about us?"
"Neither did I."
"What did he say to you?"
Taryn linked arms with Jace and walked back toward her Gram's room. "He said that he didn't agree with Gram's idea of me talking to Patrick. It was good to hear that."
Jace nodded. "So, have you thought anymore about seeing Patrick?"
Before Taryn could reply, Josie and Taylor came flying out of the room. Each adult gathered a child in her arms.
"Hey guys, I know you're excited, but the nurses will throw us out if you can't behave." Jace looked up at Taryn. "I'll take them down to the cafeteria while you visit with your Gram."
"Oh." She was disappointed. She had hoped Jace would come in with her when she faced her Gram.
Pat Walton saw his granddaughter's sullen expression. "I can take them, Jace. Martha would kill me if she didn't get to see you, too."
Taryn sent silent thanks to her grandfather. The man was always looking out for her.
The two women entered the hospital room. Taryn had still to release Jace's hand and she gripped it tightly when she saw the frail woman lying in the bed. She was just a shadow of the formidable woman she had once been. Taryn pasted a smile onto her face and walked to her Gram's bedside. She leaned over and kissed the pale, pasty cheek. "Hey, Gram."
Martha Walton smiled weakly at her granddaughter. She raised her right hand and gently stroked Taryn's cheek. "Hello, squirt. It's good to see you, Jace, Pat said you were here with the kids.."
Jace leaned over and kissed Martha's cheek. "It's good to see you, too. How are you feeling?"
"Better. They won't let me out until my blood pressure goes down. I keep telling them that I'll be better when I can see my boy, but they won't listen."
Taryn released Jace's hand and took her Gram's limp left hand in hers, while she wiped a few stray curls off her grandmother's face. "Gram, getting yourself all worked up isn't helping."
"You look good, Ryn. Josie and Taylor were telling me you had a new girlfriend." She turned her attention to Jace. "If I'd have known you were interested in our little squirt, I would have told you all her baby stories when you were here last summer."
Jace was becoming accustomed to the red flush that she could feel climbing up her neck and into her cheeks. "Well, you can always tell me now!"
Taryn nudged her girlfriend. "Hey, don't encourage her. She just loves to gossip and half the stories are not true. I was a good baby!"
"The kids are getting really tall, aren't they?" Jace said to try and change the subject.
The older lady nodded. "I can't believe how mature Josie is. She can definitely talk. She gets that from her mother. Our Jane could talk a hungry cat off a fish wagon when she was a kid. You on the other hand, were very quiet. I see that in Taylor. Although today, he was very talkative. He told me all about his cousin Taryn and how she was living with them. It makes me a very happy lady to know you're back where you belong."
Taryn nodded. "I'm happy to be there. The atmosphere is very different."
"Because Patrick isn't there?"
"Gram, let's not go there. I don't want to upset you. I came to see you, not talk about him."
"But we have to talk about Patrick, Ryn. The doctors haven't given him long. You need to make your peace with him."
Taryn tried to calm her breathing. I need to make my peace with that bastard! No way! He can rot in hell for all I care! She was about to open her mouth and declare her feelings, when she felt a steadying hand on her leg. She glanced sideways and saw Jace gently shake her head. Calm down! She's not well! Breathe, Taryn! Count to ten! One…two…that's better. Taryn took a few moments to compose her thoughts before she spoke. "I'll go and see him, Gram, for you. I won't promise to make my peace with him, but I will see him. That's the best I can do." She hadn't decided what she was going to do until that moment. Her mind had flip-flopped between visiting him and hoping the bastard died before she got there. Seeing her Gram's distressed face and hearing the increased beeping of the heart rate monitor, Taryn had made a decision that she hoped would appease her Gram and calm her down.
"He loves you, Ryn. I know he does. Deep inside, I know he feels for you." Tears tracked down the woman's cheeks.
Jace could feel the tension in Taryn's legs. She was aware of the increased beeping emanating from the monitoring machines. She listened to the words coming out of Martha's mouth and wished the woman would consider her granddaughter's feelings. But the woman was old and not well. Her grief for her son seemed to be overriding her good sense. She watched as Taryn's jaw clenched shut. She knew an outburst was brewing and hoped in her heart that Taryn could control her thoughts. She didn't blame Taryn for one moment, if someone had told Jace the same things about her father; she knew she'd have a hard time keeping control of her emotions.
"Okay, Gram. I'll talk to him. I'll forgive him." Taryn couldn't believe the words she'd just spoken. She'd never expected those words to come from her lips. But she was beginning to see that some sayings were true. People really did do anything for love. She would do anything for her Gram and she was about to prove it. She sighed in relief when she heard the rapid beeps decrease in rate. "I promise, Gram. I'll go and see him."
"You always were a good girl. You're mom would be proud of you."
Jace gritted her teeth. The older woman was definitely using every emotional blackmail tool in the box. She rubbed Taryn's shoulder and gave her a supportive smile.
The visit from the kids and the upset from the conversation had taken its toll on the frail lady. They sat quietly and watched Martha Walton drift in and out of sleep. They didn't leave the room until Pat Walton returned with the children. Taryn leaned over her Gram's bed and saw the blue eyes flicker open. "We're going to let you get your rest, Gram. I love you."
"Okay. Thank you, Ryn. I can rest in peace now. I love you, too."
Pat Walton walked to the elevators with his grandchildren and Jace. He kissed each child and then turned his attention to Taryn. "I'm going to see Patrick tomorrow morning. Will I see you there?"
Taryn nodded. "I'll be there." She hugged her grandfather.
Jace hugged Mr. Walton after Taryn. "We'll both be there. See you tomorrow."

The white of the moon showed up brilliantly against the dark sky and a million stars dotted the black canvas. Jace leaned against the back of the sun lounger. She swallowed a mouthful of the golden liquid and winced as it burned the back of her throat. She stared up at the night sky. Her mind hadn't been able to rest since the visit to the hospital. Taryn had been sullen all the way home and hadn't wanted to discuss things with her. They had dined at a local restaurant and walked the pier in Naples. Even the gorgeous setting of the sun hadn't perked her girlfriend up. After arriving back at the hotel, Taryn had wanted some time alone and Jace had reluctantly agreed. Unsure of where to go, Jace had wandered down to the bar and ordered a nightcap. The evening was warm and taking the opportunity to soak up the Florida warmth, Jace had opted to lie outside and think. She glanced to the side when she heard the lounger beside her scrape against the cement.
"Would you like some company?"
A smile crept on Jace's face. "Yeah."
Taryn tapped her foot lightly on the concrete. Her need to be alone had disappeared the moment Jace had walked out of the hotel room. "What are you drinking?"
"Brandy. Want some?"
Taryn grimaced. "Nope, can't stand the stuff." She pulled the small packet of cigarettes from her pocket. "Do you mind?"
Jace shrugged. "It's not my decision."
The blonde took one cigarette from the packet and stared at it. She rolled the tube in her fingers and smelt the faint aroma of tobacco. "Thirteen days…"
Jace took another swallow of her drink. The burning sensation no longer hurt and she enjoyed the warm sensation that followed the amber liquid's journey down her esophagus. "A little of what is bad for you does you good."
Taryn snapped the cigarette in half. "What's good for me is lying with you on that lounger. I'm an idiot, Jace. I didn't mean to shut you out."
Jace shrugged. "You've got a lot on your mind, babe." She was pleased to see Taryn's action with the cigarette. She knew the only way for an addiction to be broken was for the person to choose to stop rather than be nagged. Taryn's decision to not smoke had come from within and Jace was proud of her. "If it's worth anything, you've made me very proud today."
"I have?" Taryn looked at Jace surprised. "I thought you'd be mad at me. I asked you to leave."
Jace held out her hand inviting Taryn to share her lounger. "Taryn, everybody needs a little time to get their head together. I wasn't happy about leaving you alone, but I understood why. I was very proud about how you handled your Gram. Despite your own feelings, you agreed to do something for her. That took a lot of guts." Jace pulled Taryn close to her. "Also, choosing not to smoke was a big step. You made that decision yourself and I'm proud of you." She kissed the blonde gently on the lips, uncaring if anyone else was watching their interactions.
Taryn snuggled into Jace's body. "I expected to find you in Jane's room."
Jace shook her head. "In my present mood, I wouldn't have been good company for Jane."
"How come?" Taryn traced a pattern down the front of Jace's t-shirt.
Jace shrugged again. "Just things."
Taryn trailed her fingers back up Jace's body and onto the slightly darker skin of the bronzed face. She stroked the small furrows that were on Jace's forehead. "What things?"
"Stuff."
Taryn tweaked one of Jace's cheeks. She knew the woman wouldn't reveal her thoughts until she had told her what had been on her mind. "Jace, I needed some time alone to clear my head about tomorrow, but I realized as soon as you were gone that I missed your company and really should have been talking it over with you. So, what stuff are you thinking about?"
"It's nothing. I just get really angry when I think of the pressure Martha and Jane are putting on you. I know Jane's just looking out for her mom, but she hasn't really considered your feelings. I know she hasn't actually said anything to you, but I hear the remarks about Patrick and your Gram and there's a lot of emotional blackmail going around."
Taryn was secretly pleased that Jace was fighting in her corner. Her grandfather's support had been a boost to her, but to hear that Jace was upset with Jane was a turn of events. The two women were usually so in tune with each other. Taryn stroked the side of Jace's face. "My hero. Always defending me, huh?"
"Always. So, did you decide what you're going to talk to Patrick about?"
Taryn leaned back and looked at the stars. She raised her hand and pointed at a cluster of stars. "See that bright star over there?"
Jace moved closer to Taryn and looked down the line of Taryn's arm. She used her own arm to help her line up the view. "Yeah."
"Since mom's death that star has always seemed to call to me. I sometimes talk to it. Does that sound silly?"
Jace shook her head. She picked up Taryn's arms and linked their hands. Then she pointed her arm several degrees away from Taryn's star and to another bright star. "I do the same, Taryn. My mom's up there smiling down on me and very happy that I've found you."
"Wow. I always thought people would think I was crazy if I told them that I talk to stars."
Jace shrugged. "Each to their own. So, did you talk to your mom tonight?"
Taryn flicked her eyes back to her star. She watched as it twinkled in the clear night sky. "Yeah. If I don't ask Patrick for my answers then I'll never know. He might insult me and throw me out, but that's nothing new. I've come to expect it. At least, I'll have tried. I'm not looking to make peace and I'm certainly not going to make his passing easier. But I think I will forgive him for his actions, but only because I'm the bigger person and it's not really up to me to weigh his conscience." It was Taryn's turn to shrug in response. "Patrick's problems have been because he could never forgive himself or Gram for Sean's death. I don't want to live the rest of my life wondering if things could have been different. For thirty-two years, I've let that man control my life." She clasped Jace's hand and brought it up to her lips. "It's time I lived my life for me…and you."
Jace pulled Taryn on top of her and held the blonde's head between her hands. She slowly brought her lips close to Taryn's and brushed a feather light kiss across them. "You're a beautiful person, Taryn."
Taryn tried to deepen the kiss, but Jace's strong arms prevented her getting too involved. She opened her eyes and waited for Jace to follow suit. "Bedroom?"
Jace winked, "I thought you'd never ask, plus I think we've given everyone enough of a show." She flicked her eyes to the left and saw a couple of people blend back into the shadows.

Jace switched off the bathroom light and then the main room lights. She stood just outside the bathroom door. You can do this! You know you want to. The soft glow of the bedside lamps illuminated her way to the bed. She took a deep breath before she walked the rest of the way to the bed. She glanced down at Taryn's wide-eyed, open-mouthed expression. "Hi."
"Hey…yourself…" Taryn's thoughts were definitely not focused on conversation. "You're…you're naked!" The tall woman's skin seemed to go on forever. Taryn could see where the sun had darkened the skin after their morning by the pool. As hard as she tried, she couldn't prevent her eyes from focusing on the dark patch of pubic hair that was just as black as the hair on Jace's head.
Jace looked down at her naked skin and fought the temptation to cover herself with her arms. She looked coyly at Taryn. "I…I don't know why, but it seemed a good thing to do while I was in the bathroom." When Taryn didn't say anything, Jace picked up the edge of the blanket and tried to slide into the bed.
Taryn watched as the image she had dreamed of slipped out of view. "Whoa! Get back out!" She winked at Jace. "I was enjoying the show."
Jace lowered the cover. "You like what you see?"
Taryn nodded enthusiastically. "Can't you tell? I'm practically drooling." She patted the top of the bed. "Want to join me on the bed?"
Jace lay down and propped her head up with her arm. She traced a finger down Taryn's cheek and neck until she reached the edge of the covers. When Taryn didn't stop her movements, she continued to pull the covers off Taryn's bare torso. She lifted her own body to allow the smooth motion of the cover down the bed. When the blankets were completely off Taryn's body, Jace's eyes lowered to the boxer shorts. Her fingers lightly traced the edge of the waistband. Her confidence was growing and she was desperate to see Taryn's whole body naked. "Can I take these off?"
Taryn tried to act like having her underwear removed was the most normal thing on earth. Yet inside, her mind was racing. She's naked! My God, she's beautiful. I think I'm going to explode. If we get naked together, we had better bloody do it or I'm going to have to take up life in a convent! She's driving me crazy. Taryn could feel Jace's fingers edging around the waistband of her boxers. She could feel the wet pool between her legs and her clit begin to swell as she thought of Jace touching her. "Be my guest." She managed to get out without stammering.
Jace took her time lowering Taryn's boxers down the shorter body. Her eyes followed her hands and she paused slightly when she caught sight of the golden hair before her.
Taryn saw Jace's facial expressions as she watched how tentatively Jace undressed her. She caught the momentary pause and couldn't resist the comment on her lips. "Yes, I am a natural blonde, although I may bleach my hair slightly blonder!" She was pleased to see Jace's bashful smile and fluttering eyelashes.
"I was curious. If it had been bleached and spiky then I was going to have to make a quick exit." She crawled back up the bed and lay down beside Taryn, her hands stroking the side of Taryn's body. "You have an awesome body."
Taryn kissed Jace on the cheek. "That makes two of us." Her mind returned to Jace's cramps earlier that day. "How are your cramps?"
"Better."
"Did you get your period?"
Jace shook her head. "No, tomorrow or Monday for sure. I usually get the cramps as a warning sign." She looked into eyes swirling with desire. "Taryn, will you make love to me?"
Taryn's brilliant smile was her answer. "Yes, and I can do one better. I can make love with you." She closed the gap between Jace and her, taking the willing woman in her arms. The kisses started off slow, but as the blood pumped energetically around both women, the more passionate the kisses became. Taryn pulled away from Jace's fervent mouth and straddled her partner's torso. She trailed her mouth over Jace's chest and breasts. She suckled one breast and then the other. Her ministrations took her to Jace's navel and she slowly licked and tasted Jace's slightly salty skin. She could smell Jace's arousal and the mere scent of it drove her own arousal forward. She rubbed her whole body against Jace's and felt strong fingers rub her head in response. She kissed her way back up Jace's body, leaving one hand dancing around the edge of Jace's pubic area. With tentative fingers, Taryn began to brush the soft hair with her fingers. With each stroke, her fingers went lower and lower, until she had reached the entrance to Jace's womanhood. She felt her partner's legs spread wider, inviting her in.
Jace felt Taryn's light touch as it teased its way down her body. Over the past week, she had touched herself in Taryn's presence, but nothing had felt like this. Taryn's fingertips seemed to burn a path down her pubic hair. When Taryn's fingers reached the apex between her legs, Jace opened them wanting her lover's hands to go where none had gone before. The tingling intensified as Taryn's competent fingers stroked the lips of her sex. She felt Taryn's fingers pause at the entrance to her vagina and her eyes opened automatically. She met brown eyes that held a questioning gaze. "Please." She gasped as she felt Taryn's finger enter her.
Taryn placed one finger at Jace's entrance. She needed to make sure that Jace really wanted this. The feel of Jace's lips and clit had been like velvet. The inviting liquid had led the way, tempting Taryn to invade Jace's whole being. As she heard Jace's plea, Taryn slowly slipped one finger into the brunette. She felt no resistance as Jace's body opened up to her. She increased her rhythm and slipped in another finger when she felt Jace's body respond to her. With skilful fingers, she moved in time with Jace, kissing her lover's neck and whispering her love as they moved as one.
Jace could feel Taryn's fingers move in and out. The instinctive need to move with Taryn drove Jace's hips up and down. She could feel Taryn's palm pressing into her swollen clit and the pressure of Taryn's fingers against the wall of her vagina. The tingling sensation that she had come to associate with a developing orgasm swept through her body.
Taryn relaxed her rhythm as she felt Jace's breathing hitch and her hips began bucking. She wanted to prolong their first time of full lovemaking. "Open your eyes, Jace. Look at me."
Jace could feel herself poised on the edge of ecstasy. She heard Taryn's plea and opened her eyes, taking in all that Taryn had to offer her. "I love you."
"I love you, too. Come for me, babe. I know you want too."
"I do!" Jace closed her eyes and gasped as she felt Taryn increase the pressure on her clit and the walls of her vagina clasped Taryn's probing fingers. With one last thrust, Jace felt the shudders travel up her body and the stars explode behind her eyelids. She collapsed limply against Taryn. Thirty-five years of waiting had definitely been worth it.
Taryn held Jace in her arms. She felt the racing pulse of Jace's heartbeat under her hand that rested behind Jace's neck. The other hand felt the pulsing aftershocks of Jace's orgasm. She could feel the walls twitch against her fingers. She waited a couple of minutes and then removed her hand from between Jace's thighs. She wiped the moisture off her fingers as she trailed them up the long torso and reached under Jace's chin to lift her girlfriend's head up to her. She kissed the swollen lips lightly and met teary blue eyes. "Hey."
"Hi."
"How are you feeling?"
Jace beamed at Taryn. "Like I just lost my virginity!" She leaned forward and captured Taryn's lips. "I'm sorry I couldn't resist saying that." She nibbled gently around Taryn's lips. "I feel great. My head feels like it's off in space somewhere."
She could feel Taryn's own desire as her partner shifted against her. Hesitantly, she lowered her hand to Taryn's pubic area. She felt Taryn turn into her hand and for the first time she felt Taryn's vaginal area with her fingers. Worried that she was doing it wrong, she opened her eyes to look at Taryn's face. What she saw was complete happiness and desire. Fuelled on by this, Jace followed her instincts and went to places she knew she herself liked. She found the tiny ball of nerves and stroked it up and down. This action caused a slight growl to leave Taryn's mouth.
Taryn couldn't believe that Jace was being as bold as she was. The fact that the older woman had led the way in their lovemaking was a big step. The feel of Jace's fingers stroking her clit was bringing Taryn closer and closer to the ultimate pleasure. Long fingers slipped in and out of her and seemed to be playing her like a musical instrument. With every stroke, Taryn felt herself edging nearer and nearer to the precipice. Unable to keep the gasping pants from leaving her body, Taryn expressed her love for Jace. When she could no longer keep her orgasm at bay, Taryn jumped headily over the edge and sank down into Jace's welcoming embrace.
"Fast learner." Taryn muttered into her lover's ear as she toppled over the edge time and time again.
