Transformation takes place about a year before Xena and Gabrielle are thought dead and placed on ice by Ares. Caesar has defeated the combined Greek armies and plans to sweep across Greece and make it part of the Roman Empire. Before he can conquer the city-states one by one he must defeat the Amazon Nation.
Queen Gabrielle and Xena go to the aid of the Amazons. The Fates have decreed that both Gabrielle and Xena will be killed defending the Amazon territory unless a champion can come to their rescue. Problems is, the Gods do not want any interference from "Known Champions" such as Hercules.
Ares can't stand by and allow Xena to be killed. If he can't bring in a known hero he will mentor one. He solicits Joxer and trainees him in the art of combat. Ares also brings in help from a former Roman battle tactician now a drunkard and a brave Greek cavalryman. Together they must unite the Greek armies and come to the aid of the Amazons and drive the Romans out of Greece.
Joxer also meets and recruits a young woman that is a balladeer by profession and an outstanding archer. She has a romantic interest in Joxer. But Joxer's heart belongs to Gabrielle, right?
The story is told in the third person by the bard Virgil, that's right, Joxer's son.

Usually, I'd rather jump off the Sears Tower head first into a thumbtack than indulge in any shameless self-promotion, but alas, times are tough.
Last summer, my brother (who lost his wife two years earlier in a freakish gardening accident) took his family to a picnic in the park. Sadly, the event ended in tragedy as they were caught out in the open during a particularly nasty electrical storm. Heroically, my brother fashioned himself a tinfoil hat in the hope that if lightning struck, he would attract it to himself and thus, save his six little girls.
Unfortunately, when the blast came, it was so powerful that it not only vaporized my brother on the spot, it rendered all six of my nieces completely hairless.
I cannot describe to you how difficult, and costly, it is to care for six pre-adolescent girls that have special needs. They are now getting to the age where their appearance is very important to them, and they cry rivers every morning when I paint on their hair and send them off to school.
Despite my artistic efforts and the vast array of spray paint colors available, I'm saddened to admit that I now need help. Quality wigs are expensive and I just don't have the money. I've tried to talk economics with the girls but they loathe the thought of another coat of paint, and are dead set against my proposal of wearing football helmets until our financial situation improves. So, please, reevaluate your own finances and buy a copy of 'Engravings of Wraith'. Only with your generosity can I provide a measure of happiness to six bald, but otherwise beautiful, little girls.

It's hard to give a short description of this story without giving away parts of the plot. Lemme just stick with saying that: yes, this is another one of those post-FIN tales, but I'd like to think this one is different. This story isn't about getting Xena reheaded (though I'll admit that's what it started out to be right in the beginning). It's about stuff like redemption, true sacrifices and how sometimes little things, insignificant events that will fade and dissapear from the memories of most, can be far more meaningful than grand battles for 40.000 souls. It's about things that I felt FIN didn't deal with properly.
If you're looking for a light read, this ain't it. This story is dark and pretty complex. It's gonna have its comedy moments, but in the end it's gonna deal with some tough issues. You might like it. And you might not. Either way, I'll hope this'll make for an interesting read.

I considered not doing an update today but the more I thought about it, the more I didn't want what happened to change what we do. I felt sure of this decision when I received the following from one of the bards who sends stuff to the Academy, Cephalgia -(posted with permission)

I want to share a short story with you. On September 20th of last year, a scant 9 days after the terrorist attack, I went to a Melissa Etheridge concert in Oakland. The crowd was large but somewhat subdued. When Melissa came on she talked to the audience and said "I know we've all had a rough time recently but I think the best way to heal is to get back to doing what it is we do. This is what I do." She then proceeded to give an over 2 hour kick ass solo concert.

So I respectfully offer our update and a Happy Birthday to our hostess with the mostest, Missy Good.
